Actor’s Aides Decry Davis Comment About Accent

— The race for governor got personal this weekend, with aides to Arnold Schwarzenegger demanding an apology from Gov. Gray Davis for a derogatory comment about the Austrian-born actor. Davis told a prospective voter that "you shouldn't be governor unless you can pronounce the name of the state," according to a report in Sunday's Sacramento Bee. Schwarzenegger struck back at the perceived insult. "He doesn't like the way I say 'California' because I say Cal-EE-fornia, rather than Cal-AH-fornia," said Schwarzenegger...<snip>

"I was just joking around with someone in the crowd," Davis said. "But I tell you it is no joke when Arnold Schwarzenegger votes for 187, and it's no joke when he tells people the first thing he's going to do is to repeal the bill I signed giving immigrants the right to drive in this state. I understand that our economy depends on work that Americans won't do." Davis was referring to the fact that Schwarzenegger supported Proposition 187, a measure that sought to ban illegal immigrants from many social programs. <snip>
