Dem Bowles Enters Race for Edwards' Senate Seat
Bowles is running for Senate
Former White House staffer sought Senate seat in '02

By ROB CHRISTENSEN, Staff Writer

Former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles told supporters Wednesday that he will be a candidate next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Edwards.
In an e-mail letter to 6,000 backers, Bowles said his broad background in business and government would help him stabilize North Carolina's wobbling economy.

"I want to do all I can to create an environment that gets our economy going and makes the people of North Carolina feel secure again," Bowles wrote. "I want to provide leadership in the U.S. Senate that makes good common sense, that really helps people and that puts North Carolina values ahead of knee-jerk partisanship."

Bowles is expected to formally announce his candidacy today in a series of interviews with reporters. Bowles had been expected to get into the Senate race ever since Edwards announced on Sept. 7 that he would devote his energies to his quest for the White House rather than seek re-election.

1. This is great news
I was really angered that Edwards dropped out of the race, but this brings some hope. IMHO, getting back at least one house of congress (and the senate is the only realistic shot this election) is JUST as important as getting whistle-ass out of the white house.

2. I think
he has a good chance too. His strongest competition is a lying Shrub licker.

3. They had been meeting about this before Edwards dropped out.
I believe he had two or three meetings with Bowles about the issue.

In fact, this may be very good for NC, because Edwards had the magic seat, where no one is reelected, but since Bowles is a new contender he has a good shot.

I don't think the competition is that great this cycle, either.
