1. I'm just waiting for another rib-tickling Washington Post editorial
Gee, those guys have such a great sense of humor!

(Industrial-strength sarcasm now off).

5. That was my first thought, too.
That editorial was appalling. I wrote a nasty letter to them about it, basically asking them if they'd find it as funny if 15,000 Alaskans died of heat exposure due to a freak temperature spike in the NW.

2. I was just about to say what you did about the Freeps!
Someone here posted a Freak Republic thread in which they were rejoicing over the French heat wave death toll. One sicko psycho even went so far as to say "ten thousand down, ten million more to go!" And WE'RE supposed to be the name-calling, mean-spirited ones?

7. Thank you!
RFK is my favorite Kennedy, and it's always made me sick what happened and how people continually try to trash his memory and that of JFK.

I'm reading a new fiction book now, A Disturbance of Fate, by a historian and philosopher, and it's all about what would have happened had RFK not been assassinated and if he'd won the election. It's really fascinating, though depressing as well, when you think what might have been.

6. Freepers are a Subhuman Group
They have many of the characteristics of hominoids, but with a severely underdeveloped brain.

8. Up here in New England
Many people (especially nursing homes) do not have air conditioning. I know my grandfather's nursing home does not have air Conditioning. If a heat wave of say of ten straight days of 105 degrees came through here, undoubtably many people would suffer severe heat exhaustion and some people would die (who knows how many). I bought an AC this year and all the stores ran out the first day temps hit the high 80's. Basically not many are kept in stock, so it owuld be chaos.

Many Freeper columnists blamed the French deaths on Socialism, or just the French being stupid. Go figure.

9. a unexpected mortal summer
France has a temperate climate. In the south, the summer is warm but never up to 95°F during several days, the air conditioning is common. In north, this temperature is exceptional, the A C isn't useful.

This year, the summer was the warmest since 500 years. Between 90 and 105°F during several weeks. The mortality among the oldest has been terrific, especially in the north of France, of course.
