Toyota declares Americans too stupid for factory work
Got this from rotten.com:

Toyota to build 100,000 vehicles per year in Woodstock, Ont., starting 2008

"Ontario workers are well-trained. That simple explanation was cited as a main reason why Toyota turned its back on hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies offered from several American states in favour of building a second Ontario plant." ... "Several U.S. states were reportedly prepared to offer more than double that amount of subsidy. But said much of that extra money would have been eaten away by higher training costs than are necessary for the ." ... "In Alabama, trainers had to use pictorials to teach some illiterate workers how to use high-tech plant equipment."

Yep, and that is why I fully support these people becoming a seperate republic: I'm tired of my tax dollars feeding some piece of tornado-bait and her seven "home-schooled" crotch-droppings. Let them pay their own way for once.

Sound familiar? Yeah, I feel really nice (sarcasm). Heh.

6. "home-schooled" crotch-droppings.
They taste absolutely wonderful when sprinkled with a pinch of powdered sugar.

9. "Yep, and that is why I fully support these people...
becoming a separate republic".

A funny scenario I've always imagined is the dyed-in-the-wool confederates getting all revved up for Civil War II: the reckonin', but then getting sorely disappointed when the "union" is more than happy to let them go.

18. Why don't you leave instead of forcing us to?
I mean - I live in the South and I'm an American and I don't want to be in a separate republic.

If you can't get your ass down here to help overcome the propaganda we have for news media and help educate people instead of bitching, what good are you?

(Not so nice when someone calls you on your bigotry, is it?)

3. And...
In addition to lower training costs, Canadian workers are also $4 to $5 cheaper to employ partly thanks to the taxpayer-funded health-care system in Canada, said federal Industry Minister David Emmerson.

5. Health-care
Ford and GM have both said that they pay as much per-car-produced in health-insurance costs for American workers as they do for steel ($1000-$1500 per car). One or both of the two has factories in Canada and has actually made a gentle peeping noise in support of the Canadian health-care system.

7. This is what we get when the gov't keeps cutting education spending
Also, many of these poorer states are already at a disadvantage as far as education funding goes. On the local level, it is taxes from property taxes that fund school districts at this level, and the federal government and state government usually chip in some amount to augment it. Unfortunately, many states are running huge deficits and are looking to cut the budget. The federal government keeps going on these wild spending binges on military hardware, while cutting back on education programs and other social programs. This leaves the locals to take on a bigger burden of the funding, but in too many cases, they are the least able because they are the poorest.

10. I'd also argue this was shoved down their throats via corporate news media
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 12:12 AM by Selatius
When you have ultra-rightwing freemarketeer nutjobs on the air often and don't have on folks on the left like, say, Noam Chomsky or Gore Vidal on television as often as the nutjobs, you can get folks to do things they wouldn't normally do because you skewed their perception of reality.

I don't disagree with your point, but I'd also put up my point next to yours as well to try to paint a fuller picture of what's going on.

14. I posted this reply on one of the London threads...
It is about the reaction to the bombings...I don't want to go off topic, that is not the intent of this post - but I said much the same thing you have - change "the war" to any other real issue such as education or taxes - the concept is the same.:

"I blame this reaction on our Societal attitudes we unconsciously have been subjected to...we are all products of the TV/Video Game/Mass Media upbringing most have had. Reality is the unpaid bill sitting on the table, the car that needs brakes in the garage, the sick child who is spitting up on the carpet...Reality is not some far away country that we don't understand, that is simply electrons spinning across a glass tube, white background noise for our everyday issues."

Until the MSM covers the war in Iraq as it should, shows the reality that those folks over there are really the same as us, actually educates us in a truly impartial way; people will react this way. But of coarse, the MSM has never done that until forced too; it was the same in 1965; it was the same in Cambodia in the 70's and 80's; it was the same in Rwanda in the 90's; it was the same in a hundred different spots across the globe in the last 50 years."

12. Break the teachers union! That's the answer, keep Americans DUMBER!
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 12:50 AM by Zinfandel
Yes, Arnold is trying. Republicans are going full blast...They see it as tax dollars that can be in their pocket...Education to them is like Social Security, a give away, not benefiting them and helping the less fortunate...why should they give a fuck about them.

More profitable & controllable in the long run, to keep the masses DUMB and DUMBER.

16. Cheap labor
I live in Texas so I'm not into insulting our state. (although...)
I suspect the San Antonio plant benefits from cheap labor. In this part of the country anything above minimum wage may look good for many.

17. So the gain in cheap labor is not offset by our stupidity?
By the way, I'm ragging on this notion that Toyota thinks we're all idiots. Obvisouly we have SOMETHING going for us, and I suspect you are correct with your notion of cheap labor, and the propensity for Texans to give away huge tax breaks to corporations.
