I am sitting here at the moment trying for all I am worth to understand why we, as a country, can't simply cut our military budget in half and use much of the saved money to support the social programs this country needs as well as the infrastructure repair and improvements that we are in dire need of. Even at half of our current rate of expenditure we would still be the most powerful military on earth with absolutly no real contenders comming up from second place.

1. it takes a visionary.... |
|
...president to inspire America to greater things. Al Gore was such a person, and he would have created a new "moon conquest" type of technological leap that would have inspired Americans and provided a whole new sector of jobs.
Republicans, with their deeply imbedded allegiance to defense contractors, cannot provide that leadership.

3. The GOP won't do it, since it's all they have to run on |
|
and the Dems won't do it because they're so afraid of appearing to be "weak on defense".
But you're right, the amount of money we spend on defense is obscene.
