I feel bad for Tony Blair.

On the day of the WTC attack his statements about the world being with us really touched me. It was the first voice of calm I had heard all that day. Finally, Bush came out of hiding and started banging the war drums which, given his track record at anything except getting into public office, scared the hell out of me because I suspected he was just the WRONG person for this time in our country. My opinion has not changed.
But Mr. Blair for all his faults touched me that day.

10. Blair gave a great speech after 9/11, and I remember thinking

at that time that it was too bad we had a bumbling doofus like Bush as a "leader" rather than a smart, eloquent, articulate guy like Blair. Unfortunately Tony has spent the last 4 years stepping in George's poo, and liking it, and I just don't have any use for him any more. He's been enabling the BFEE's Iraq misadventure from the beginning, and if you ask me he can go bugger himself.

13. I don't feel bad for Blair

Blair gave Bush the critical support he absolutely required in order to invade Iraq. Why did he do this over the concerns of his intelligence services that doing so was unwise, and over the concern of his legal counsel that doing so was a criminal act of international aggression?

Because he wanted to position his Labour party as "just as good" a partner to US militarism as the Tories.

Please read up on the Downing Street Memoranda. It's spelled out in red ink. Blair wanted to make Labour useful and reliable for American imperialism.

These people who've died in London were killed by Blair's shameless cynicism--just as though he shot them in the head each with a pistol. He did it--he killed them-- for his own GAIN. Just like the thousands and thousands he has killed in Iraq. More innocents will die too, before Britain is done paying for his crime.

I feel bad because Blair will probably be able to spin this event into a spectacle of nationalism and blood vengeance behind which he can shield his personal treachery and his utter lack of character.

Let's save our pity for Blair's victims whether in Baghdad or London or wherever they turn out to be.

15. He lost my respect when he went with the lies

just like Colin Powell and John McCain. They're smart enough to know we lied to the world. And yet they put their allegiance to the Bush administration ahead of their country.
Blair betrayed his country and ours.
I feel great sympathy for the people of England. Like us, they have a leader who cares more about his own stature and less about the truth and what is right.
He will have to live with his decision to knowingly misleed the world.

17. If it weren't for Iraq, I would like Blair. Other than that one issue, he

is quite liberal. I've always sworn that * had something on him or made some threats. I remember about a year ago reading something about some very severe pressure/threats made from the US before the war. I want to say it had to do with oil and tariffs (could it have been steel related somehow? Maybe not.) but it would have been pretty devastating to the UK economy from what I remember. I also think I remember that it happened during closed door meetings between US and UK officials and it sort of was - either you support us or we cut all this off and make this a living hell for you. I wish I could remember more details and where I read it. Does anyone else remember this? It was not well publicized, but I remember that I thought the source seemed legit and not particularly liberal.

This doesn't make me forgive Blair for his decision to support * and his war, but I also know that he is very good on a lot of other issues. If I were British, I would not have been able to vote for him though because I feel too strongly about the war.
