Gulf of Mexico temp 91 degrees at Clearwater Beach

Meteorologist on Tampa Bays 10 news yesterday said that in his 25 years in the area, he had never seen the Gulf get that warm.

Talk about hurricane fuel!

1. Global Warming

I attribute this warming of the oceans to global warming. However, scientists also believe that the weakening of our magnetosphere may have to do with global climate change. Anyhow, the warmer the water, the stronger the hurricanes...yikes...

We're screwed. As you said, warmer water breeds stronger hurricanes. And in the meantime, Nero Jr. in the white house keeps fiddling along denying global warming, and refusing to go along with Kyoto.

I moved from Clearwater last year back to New York. It was too damned crowded and I KNEW that there is a major disaster waiting to happen in that area. They dodged too many bullets for too long. Hurricane Dennis is the first of many severe storms that are going to happen this year and sooner or later the Tampa, St. Pete area is going to take one on the chin.
It's my daughter's last year at Tulane U. in New Orleans coming up. I pray to God she makes it through this year. NO is due for a catastrophic event as well. Every year we've had to fly her out of there when Hurricane season kicks up. I'll be a very happy Dad when she's back in New York where she belongs.

My daughter's boyfriend is visiting us in Los Angeles
at the moment. He lives in New Orleans and is
starting at Tulane in the fall. He said his family
was evacuating the area, have you heard
anything more about whether or not the area
is still in danger?
I worry about him going to school there since
there seems to be every reason to believe
the hurricanes are increasing there.

Wasn't the usual summertime temp 87 degrees? 91 seems a LOT higher.

9. I grew up in Tampa...

I lived there from about 1962 to 1986. I don't think the Gulf has ever been that warm.

Minor rant warning:

I hate how everyone now seems to call it "Tampa Bay". (NOT directed at any DU'ers!) Tampa Bay is a body of water, in fact the bay - Tampa is the city on the eastern/northern shore of that body of water. Calling it the "Tampa Bay area" would be accurate, but a lot of people who don't know any better want to call the city Tampa Bay. It just grates my nerves!!! Would they call San Francisco "San Francisco Bay"? NO, they wouldn't. AARRRGGGHHH!
