'War on Terror' is like a war on fear or hatred - it's impossible |
|
to win. That is what infuriates me about chimpy's handler's choices of words. We can't win a war on terror, we can't even wage a war on terror. Violence begats violence.

8. War On Terror is a false premise. |
|
What the Bush Regime is about is War Against any countries that don't play ball with the Multi-Corps. The war is also against Extremist Islam. Any concept that is not simplistic seems to fail with most people. The want complicated matters boiled down to slogans and simple soundbytes. The root causes of attacks upon Amerika are rarely discused by politicians and the root causes are not addressed. It is so much easier to merely declare War and engage in destruction.

3. When you wage war on a noun... |
|
the noun always wins.
But it sounds good to the backside of the Bel Curve, doesn't it?
The War On Terror is really a "war" on a tactic.
Our American Revolution was proof positive that a war on terror doesn't work. And we were the insurgents, weren't we?
By the way, Rudy G. is on TV again... sounding like Porky Pig.

4. Thanks so much for saying that... |

I agree 100% with you. Military offensives will NEVER solve this problem - each offensive will only create more in retaliation.
It's an unwinnable war - like the "war on drugs" or the "war on poverty" - war is not the answer. War is effective over territory/boundary disputes. That is all. Humankind will never overcome beliefs/ideas through military action.
But then, I'm a "root causes" kind of person who believes that the only way anything can be truly resolved is by dealing with the root causes.

6. You can't wage war ... |
|
on a mindset. The only way to defeat it is to address the issues that create that mindset. Until we do that, we won't ever be safe from terrorism.
Note to Bush & Blair: Killing over 100,000 innocent people is not a good way to address the issue. :eyes:

Doesn't anybody have any respect for history?
Can't you remember WW2?
Thankfully we rose to the occasion and won "The War Against Suprise Attacks", as WW2 is commonly referred to, by those of us with any knowledge of history!

15. I have a very good knowledge of history, thank you. |
|
And you can't group WWII and terrorism together, simply because terror has always been with us and always will be, especially when brutal policies result in deaths that many Americans don't care about.
And we didn't win 'The War Against Surprise Attacks'.
Can't you remember 9/11?

It's deliberately been named the "War on Terror" for the very reason that it is impossible to win. Consider that this "war" has been used to justify any number of policies (UK patriot act, war in Iraq/Afghanistan, ID card schemes, over-zealous airport frisking, etc.) and we begin to realise why this is so desirable to right wing governments.
I hate to keep doing this but I have to doff my hat to George Orwell for giving us such a prescient book in 1984. I would never have noticed any of what's happening if Orwell hadn't described totalitarianism so clearly.
on edit: of course, I meant "US patriot act". This post is obviously from the future ;-)

11. But there are things we can do: |
|
We can oppose states that sponsor terrorists, and we can secure ourselves against terrorists, and we can choose a foreign policy that lessens the conditions that foster the growth of terrorist organizations.

12. I've always summed it up this way |
|
Normal, rational people moved on with their lives after 9-11 (assuming they weren't family members of the victims) and tried to look at the bigger picture of what could be done.
The Freepers and their ilk are still living in 9-12-01. The day after. Consumed by revenge and hatred for their fellow man.

13. Comedian David Cross mentions this on one of his CDs |
|
I can't remember if it's on Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! or It's Not Funny, but he says something like, "Let's face it--the 'war on terror' is a fucking joke. It's like a war on jealousy. You can't win it. There'll never be a point when we can say, 'Well, got 'em all, everybody loves us again!'"

14. Yes. Waging war on an idea is like trying to capture smoke... |
|
It simply can't be done. To pretend otherwise is a farce.
And I'm not talking about just rolling over, either. There are other methods -- good methods -- of preventing and combating the root causes of foreign animosity towards the U.S., and for defending and securing our people here at the same time.

They hate us for our FREEDOMS.
The answer is simple: Give up our freedoms and then they'll like us.
Thats why I support enhancing the Patriot Act and making it permanant. I'm a proud fighter against ALL terrorism!

Great way to keep the young from getting too uppity - kill 'em off! Create generation after generation of warrior-class cannon fodder...keep them war profiteers rollin' in the dough.
