Poll question: Would you "collaterally" kill another child if you had to in order to |
|
prevent your own child from being killed?
I realize that this is a nasty poll, but I ask you to not answer it without thought. Basically, if you had to kill (indirectly or otherwise) an innocent child or other person in order to prevent one of your family members from being killed in a war, would you do it (or agree with it?)

5. We've been discussing our country's reaction to terrorism. |
|
I think it's entirely necessary.
It's a nasty poll, but many ethical questions are just this bad. I encountered these in my philosophy classes all the time. It shouldn't be that hard to deal with.

"It shouldn't be that hard to deal with."
Wha??? It shouldn't be that hard to contemplate killing an innocent person to save another person?
Yeah, ok. Well, it's hard for ME to contemplate something like that. Hell I can't even make my brain GO there.
I guess it's a limitation of mine. I tell my brain "killing of innocent person" and it just goes "NO" before I can finish with the condition of it.

11. It's inflammatory, as it was intended to be. |

You aren't "teaching" anyone anything with polls like this. You're not the only DUer who majored in psychology--I majored in history and would never ask DUers to choose between killing a German or a Jew. It's just pointless.

are.
And I didn't major in psychology, and I'm not trying to teach anybody anything. I trying to provoke real discussion, here.
This is the same kind of thing you get asked in front of the draft board.

14. So, you say this poll is ok because it's relevant, or because it's... |
|
something that was brought up in a psychology class, or because the Enola Gay pilot faced the same question, and, finally, because draft boards ask the same question.
Uh huh. Crystal clear, aren't you.

10. No it's not. This is the question the bomber in the Enola Gay faced. |
|
I admit it's tough, but it's certainly relevant.

12. What? The enola gay bomber had the choice of dropping a bomb... |
|
on his child or someone else's? No, I don't think his orders gave him a choice.
You have yet to show relevance. We aren't stupid. We all know that every person is a mother's child. But your poll has no relevance to current geopolitical realities.

Horrible poll that it is, it's a question that makes anyone uncomfortable. It's also one that no parent would ever want to face.
