Board Nixes Creationism Show at Okla. Zoo
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 11:20 p.m. ET

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A city board reversed direction on Thursday and rejected plans to add a creationist exhibit to the Tulsa Zoo.

Board members voted 3-1 against installing an exhibit on the origin of life from the Bible. The vote, made at a special meeting of the board, reversed a June 7 decision to add a Genesis story to the zoo.

...

Hicks, an architect, had agreed to pay for a Genesis exhibit and came to Thursday's meeting with a 5-foot by 3-foot plan for the display as he envisioned it.

...

''This board has deviated from their past practice of allowing religious displays to be erected at the Tulsa zoo without censorship by voting today to censor the Genesis account of creation and in doing so has stepped on the constitutional liberties of Tulsa taxpayers,'' Hicks said.

3. You know, every culture has a creation story, but
you never hear anyone suggest we treat those stories like absolute truth.

4. That's good to hear...
I'm a former resident of The Oil Capital (boy does that date me). One of the reasons I moved was the Fundie Crap that you had to endure on a daily basis and when I heard of that display at the zoo, I just shook my head. I still go back home (I grew up in Skiatook) now and again and during the election I was amazed at how many Kerry/Edwards signs I saw even out in the country.

Oklahoma will be a Red State for a long time but it doesn't mean that ALL of the people that live there fall for the hype and lies they are fed by the GOB legislators and their churches. Gives me hope.

5. Pfft.
The article said that only 300 people had expressed interest in having the Genesis exhibit put in the zoo. This in a city with a population of 3,450,654. There obviously isn't that much interest in the exhibit.

6. Kudos to Tulsa activists who worked to make a difference.
People just like you have made a difference for their community today.

Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, they send forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

7. "... has stepped on the constitutional liberties of Tulsa taxpayers,''
I've noticed a lot of talk on conservative and/or "Christian" sites about how their rights are being trampled.

Usually, whatever they're whining about has something to do with forcing everyone else to listen to, put up with or go along with their narrow world view and their astonishment at the idea that not everyone wants to.

10. Yep
What about the rights and liberties of other's? Oh yeah. You only matter if you're white and believe like they do. It gets so old.

8. Good
If they want to put up a Creation museum either buy their own building and pay for it themselves and not with tax payers. Or make a museum room at their church.
