Bay Buchanan Smears Clark as "Gay" on CNN |
|
Just in (CNN's Inside Politics) ... Bay Buchanan adeptly smeared General Clark as being "ligt in the loafers" on policy. Of course, "light in the loafers" is a commonly used slur by Bay and her generation to accuse a man of being gay. Subliminal code words to the neocons and viewers paying half attention to the discussion.
Knowing the means and ways that neocons slur and slander Democrats will make it harder for them to get away with it.

I think this expression is supposed to mean "not very bright", and not a reflection on his orientation. Of course, how can you rise to commander of NATO in the military meritocracy and not be bright ?

6. Let's go to the dictionary for the real meaning ... |
|
: LIGHT IN THE LOAFERS – “light-footed – pertaining to a homosexual male. Cf. ‘light’ (sense 1). Light on his feet. (U.S. slang, 1900s.) light – 1. lewd; wanton (numerous writings attest since the 1300s)…” : From “Slang and Euphemism: A Dictionary of Oaths, Curses, Insults, Ethnic Slurs, Sexual Slang and Metaphor, Drug Talk, College Lingo and Related Matters” by Richard A. Spears (New American Library, Penguin Putnam, New York, Third Edition, 2001).
: light in the loafers – or light on one’s feet – (of men) effeminate or homosexual. 1967 DAS (Dictionary of American Speech)(Supp.) Lightfooted…Homosexual. Fairly common since c1955…” : From “Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, Volume 2, H-O, by J.E. Lighter, Random House, New York, 1997.”

Definitely a subliminable message to Neocons and homophobes.
I don't think she's that stupid to use such a term. There are lots of things she can say to mean not very bright. But light in the loafers is not one.
NO ONE hates gays more than rePukes... which makes me wonder why the Log Cabin Republicans haven't been clued in? Think they'll pick up on this?

There's no question that General Clark is not gay. But, it doesn't prevent the ilk of Bay Buchanan and CNN from allowing coded messages to the right wing homophobes to slip into their reporting in order to leave that impression.
Wake up, this is how stupid questioning of the candidates gets started! Educate yourself on the disinformation and propoganda techniques of the right wing!

A state politician used it when Graham announced for Strom's Senate seat. He later backed off saying he only meant that Lindsey wasn't big enough to fill Strom's shoes.

This can be a difficult issue, why I am not sure, possibly because people can't express what they are trying to say adequately in this medium. (did that make sense?) Being gay is not an insult, being called gay is not an insult but refering to something bad in the same sentence as refering it to the gay society is an insult to gays, not an insult to what they were refering to. HA! Even I can't make much sense while trying to be sensitive.

and most of the people here don't think it is either. However, you have to look at the intended audience she was directing this message at.
For us here, saying someone is gay is like so what? But for the fundies and freepers that she wants to reach, it IS considered an insult (sorry to say, but true). Think of how much time and effort they spend on attacking gays and protesting against the "homosexual agenda."
A lot of Repugs are definitely disenchanted with Bush right now. They might gravitate toward Clark because he is seen as a strong military man. If they start insinuating he's gay, that will certainly send any possible wafflers scurrying back to Bush. Well, Bush may be screwing up the world and the U.S. economy, but at least he's not gay. :eyes:
This is just my analysis of this situation. It's not right or fair or enlightened, but it is the reality that we are trying to change.
