Dennis bearing down on Florida

Thousands flee Florida Keys as Hurricane Dennis heads toward United States
07/08/05
Associated Press

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — The first rain from Hurricane Dennis started falling Friday on the Florida Keys as the storm barreled toward the Gulf of Mexico, and forecasters warned that it might score a direct hit on the island chain. Even if the eye passes to the west, they warned, hurricane-force winds extended up to 50 miles from the center, and tropical storm-force winds stretched up to 140 miles out.

Key West's streets were calmer than usual early Friday, the result of an evacuation order issued a day earlier, but the Category 4 storm could batter the islands by evening, forecasters said. Morning breezes were expected to grow into stronger winds, joined by heavier rain and storm surges.

Forecasters also warned Gulf Coast residents from Florida to Louisiana to be ready for Dennis to come ashore(AccuWeather.com)
by Sunday. With top winds at 135 mph, the storm is already ``extremely dangerous,'' the National Hurricane Center said. Dennis was blamed for at least five deaths in Haiti.

....

Everyone in the southernmost Keys, along with all tourists and mobile home residents in the low-lying island chain, were ordered to evacuate, and Gov. Jeb Bush declared a state of emergency. People snatched up bottles of water and other hurricane supplies as cars streamed out of the Keys.

1. ROFL! You're subject line reads as though Jeb, himself
is the "state of emergency."

Which, of course, is true. :hi:

8. You be safe down there.
It's always so frightening to see such a big storm doing such extensive damage. We'll keep you in our thoughts.

6. I wonder if all those people who still have blue tarps covering their
houses are in the line of fire. Great job Jebby.

I'll never understand why Floridians haven't stormed the Gov. mansion yet and tossed that a**hole in the everglades.

10. From what I've been reading
Pensacola Beach area still has a lot of "blue roofs". And also a lot of debris that is still uncollected from last summer/fall.

My heart goes out to all in the path of this thing...

I'm a former Florida Boy and I hate hurricanes.

20. We live just north of Mobile, and Ivan was just terrifying,
tell me this doesn't look worse! We have a trilevel house, so daughter, husband, dog, cat & myself will all huddle downstairs. I really need a shipment of tranquilizers here!
