Ok you know those kids who come door to door selling those magazines in that "contest" ... well i had this one guy who just came by and said "oh i didn't mean to disturb you but would you please vote for me" and i said "sorry I'm not interesting in buying a magazine" and he said "how do you know I'm selling magazines" and i said "because i always get kids coming here trying to sell them to me" and he said "well if you buy some we will stop coming by" and i said "i cant afford to because I'm broke" and he said "every time we come buy your broke? thats hard to believe" ok .. now most people would have just closed the door on him but i was trying to be nice... i said "well when you get laid off that tends to happen" and he said "well I'm in the military and i didn't get laid off after 9/11" and i said "well i am a flight attendant and I DID get laid off after 9/11" and then he said "oh well yeah..that does suck" and walked away.... wtf was that?? just say "sorry ma'am for wasting your time" not try to call me a liar and pick a fight... what the hell? ok.. i wont be nice to anymore of those guys...

1. Get a "No Soliciting" Sign - maybe two |
|
I have one at the start of the sidewalk to my house and then one right near the door. (Both are discrete, but any non-blind person should see them unless they are playing dumb).

When I was knocking on doors for a living (a progressive political canvassing and lobbying operation), I discovered something about "No Soliciting" signs: they are very often placed by people who have a hard time saying "no" and try to use the sign to replace their own lack of assertiveness. I was told this by a veteran canvasser when I started out, and didn't believe it until I started working the signs myself, and found it to be true!! For the most part, a "No Soliciting" sign became, for me, the harbinger of a nice contribution. Because, after all, I wasn't soliciting, I was gathering support, right? :)

But my front yard doesn't have a fence (only the back), but on the rare occasion the front doorbell rings, the dogs freak out. And the person doing to ringing has no clue about the size of the dogs. I just let them wait until they go away.

I've had them come to my door frequently.
Having a peephole is helpful. :)

11. Why do you answer the door? |
|
can you see them, either through a window or peephole? I don't answer the door for anyone who I don't know, unless they have a post office or UPS or Fedex uniform on. Yeah, I know some of those can be fakes but it hasn't happened yet.

13. That's when I "accidentally" open the door too far and let the dogs out. |
|
Sure they're friendly and mostly harmless, but they're big, and loud, and unless you look past the dangerous end (the one that's trying to lick you) and see the tails wagging desperately, they're pretty effective at keeping away the riff raff.
Of course, I live in the country, so the only solicitors I get are the frikking jehovah's witnesses, but that's a whole different story.
