DU plan for America
Howabout if we all add an idea to get us out of debt, out
of Iraq, to create jobs and what would those be, give
everyone universal health care, protect the environment,
keep large American businesses paying taxes etc.

3. here's my contribution
legalize pot, regulate and tax the use of hemp-based products.

with the 000s of billions this would generate, i'm thinking a whole lot of domestic problems could be made to go away. some of the money could also be spent on drug-abuse programs, to medically treat those with addictions to heavy drugs, alcohol, and perscription pills. hemp oil and hemp fibers could save us additional billions on oil & gas costs, and save many of our forests. family farms could be saved by growing just a few acres of hemp. poor and sick people could have a low cost alternative to drugs for nausea, nervousness, etc. the list of the beneficial results of hemp legalization is very long. of course, like booze it would still be an adults-only product, and not available to children.

5. I agree about hemp products
and think importing these is actually the way to
help third world countries. Change to building more
with bamboo (flooring, furniture)

6. yeah, hemp is good for many things...
would create jobs in a wide variety of markets.

Also, non-violent pot smokers should be grandfathered through, and released.

4. getting out of Iraq, etc
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 04:12 PM by ixion
Well, first things first. We must pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan, apologize to our allies and make ammends however necessary.

Then we need to begin focusing on OUR country again...
Alertnatives to oil,
Allow the internet to remain tax free,
Repeal Bush's Tax cuts,
Repeal the unPATRIOTic Act,
Rollback the changes to Bush's destructive environmental policies,
Reinvest in education and its programs,
Decrminalize and Regulate Marijuana,
Punish large corporations (LIKE ENRON) who do not abide by SEC regs,
Try and heal the hatred the Bush cabal has spread between Americans.

I think these things would go a long way towards fostering a happier environment, which would lead to a better economy. No one except the defense industry and security companies are going to be creating jobs if we are constantly at war.

9. Got one
A federal program that builds universities to turn out doctors. They would accept students tuition free in return for a period of service to a community health system.
This would be the basis for a single payer health care plan that covered everyone no questions asked.

10. hey, that's an interesting idea...
sort of like Northern Exposure, but with Universities. :-)

Really, though, that would be very cool. You wouldn't even necessarily have to build universities.. you could expand the infrastructure that we've got, and focus on more than just medicene...

nice idea, ZM...

14. We have something like that
Doctors and nurses can have their educations paid by working in high need areas. The nursing program is called the Nurse Reinvestment Act and was introduced by John Kerry.

15. 90% tax on the richest people
Just like Adam Smith talked about, we should have a highly progressive tax. Just like Ben Franklin said, after a certain amount the wealth is not created by an individual's own work, but by the work of the community, and thus belongs to the community.

The richest people in America got rich because of America. The public debt was spent on the rich. It's their responsibility to pay it off. That takes care of the deficit and eventually the debt.

16. Not sure if this meets your criteria
but (1) putting an end to the practice of lobbying would be a great start to restoring our govt to one for the people rather than for the largest campaign contibutors...which segues directly into (2)true campaign finance reform...

(3)Ending the practice of adding endless amendments and riders to bills, most of which have nothing whatsoever to do with those bills might be a good thing as well.....

17. I wonder what ex-lobbyists do for a living?
We know politicians often become lobbyists, but
I wonder what happens to ex-lobbyists.

Lap dancing comes to mind...

19. Honest answer?
Elect Dennis Kucinich in 2004.

The first step to getting out of debt is getting out of Iraq. We'll never catch up as long as we're trying to soak up this whole ridiculous endeavor. Kucinich can work with the UN, and in fact has already dealt with the members a number of times. They know he's a peace advocate, and because of that I genuinely believe he could appeal to them for help and actually get it.

I kid you not, folks, if you want out of Iraq and Afghanistan, Kucinich is the man who can get it done. Between that, repealing Bush's tax cuts, and cutting the Pentagon budget, we won't spend any more than we already are and will be well on the road to recovery.
