Immediate tin-foil-hat twitch reaction on this one. An unwarranted twitch, as the man was known to be ill, but nonetheless.

15. I know how you feel... |

The death I feel really suspicious about was that of Faisel Husseini, one of the leading Palestinian peace negotiators and representative at Orient House (the de facto Palestinian Authority "embassy" in East Jerusalem). If you recall, he died of a "heart attack" while visiting Kuwait (the day before he died, the U.S. news reports were filled with stories about how he had been "spontaneously attacked" by crowds in Kuwait City). His death, right at about the time Sharon took over, removed one of the most well-known and respected Palestinian moderates in the leadership, not to mention one who was most effective at conveying the Palestinian message to the west. Not long afterwards, in response to the next Hamas suicide bombing, Israel raided and closed down Orient House, making a point of tearing down the Palestinian flag and putting up the Star of David there -- a symbolic action that helped fuel the fires of Palestinian resentment.

|
You can also access many of his articles online, ZMag, for one, has many.
Let those of us who knew him through his writings mourn in peace.

...but he also condemned the "institutional terrorism" of the Occupation. Of course, by not just restricting himself to condemning the Palestinians while giving Israel a free pass, he was labelled "pro-terrorist" by the "Israel Is Always Right" crowd, just as others are routinely tarred with the "anti-Semitism" brush if they don't just see the conflict as simply a case of peaceful, democratic, benevolent Israel being threatened by those inherently-evil Palestinian A-rab towelheads.

12. Very sorrowful news... |
|
Edward Said was absolutely brilliant, imho absolutely the BEST commentator on the Middle East.
How very tragic for the forces of reason and justice in the world that his voice is now stilled. He had no equal. This is a very sad day...

Didn't realize he had leukemia. Damn sad. In addition to his literary and political writing, his stuff on music is also wonderful stuff.
