Let's Just Call The Rightwing On Their Bullshit
Why fight this crap?

Bush is a very stubborn man. He is going to nominate one or two far, far rightwing, religious zealots to the Supreme Court- Christian Taliban.

I say, let him. Don't put up a fight in the Senate.

Let these fuckers destroy Roe V. Wade.

Let them rule that gays are second class citizens.

Let them strip all of us of our privacy rights.

Why? Because when they start actually implementing their theocracy, you will see a massive turn in public opinion.

The vast middle of the American electorate will turn against the Republicans in overwhelming revulsion and we will have Democratic control of the government for the next fifty years. Plenty of time to rescue the country, reshape the court and restore true freedom and liberty.

Let's call em on their threats. Go ahead. Make our day, fuckers.

1. Unfortunately....
No matter how much we fight I think it will come to this. Americans are so dense they have to be hit with a baseball bat before they will act. Until they see a direct personal threat, apathy will rule the day!

2. I have to disagree.
Once the USSC rules, it's very hard to backtrack. (That includes Roe, btw -- that's why they'll keep turning it back to the states, as they have been.)

It would be too late by the time public opinion shifted based on USSC rulings. In addition, I wouldn't bet they will. Their ignorance, and the complicity of the scMSM in keeping them ignorant, is absolutely astonishing -- and therein lies the real seed of fascism, imho.

3. Many times, I have felt the same way ... BUT
we will be living in hell for quite a while before we're able to change things back. In the meantime, millions of young women will resort to coat hangers and could die, gay people will have their lives turned upside down (they could lose their homes, their jobs and their children) and we will all be forced to allow the government into every aspect of our lives. And what will be the penalty for non-compliance?

Sorry, I know how you feel but allowing a second rise of the Third Reich can't possibly be a good thing.

9. It's going to happen anyway, isn't it?
I don't see that we have the votes to stop it. I think Roe is going to be overturned and the Southern states will all then outlaw abortion.

The silver lining is it then becomes OUR issue, not theirs.

The people I feel sorry for are poor women living in Alabama, Miss., Louisiana, South Carolina, etc. who are going to be screwed by the cruelty of these awful people.

11. You're probably right ...
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 11:24 PM by BattyDem

but that doesn't mean we should let it happen. I say we fight them every step of the way! Why make it easy for them? Who knows ... in the process of the fight we might be able to wake up some of the sheeple. :-)

But in the end, you're right ... if they succeed, then it will be OUR issue and we'll be leading the way back to democracy ... no matter how long it takes! But I refuse to give our democracy away ... they're going to have to take it!

15. I'm just discouraged
I don't see the folks on our side making wise choices about how to talk about things. I just see the same, tired rhetoric which then allows the Republicans to pigeonhole and marginalize us.

Where are the discussions about WHAT EXACTLY would happen if Roe gets overturned and the southern states criminalize abortion?

Where are the politicians DEMANDING that the anti-choice crowd explain to America, in detail, just what kind of sentences women would get for violating the law and how long would they be incarcerated and how would we pay for all the new jails that would have to be built?

Where are the Democratic politicians who call the Repubs on their crap? Make them EXPLAIN their position to America. Unbelievably, none of our "leaders" is talking plain talk that resonates with people.

17. I know how you feel ...
I suffer from depression and I have had PLENTY of bad days when I just want to give up because it all seems so f*cking pointless! :-(

Two things usually help me feel better: talking to other DUers, who are great at giving pep talks, and taking a break from all the political crap for a few days or even a week or two. It gives me a chance to "recharge my batteries" and focus on other things because sometimes it all gets very overwhelming.

I know it's frustrating. I know how much you want to smack the Dems for being so silent and spineless on these issues. Believe me, I've been there. Just hang in there ... you're not alone. we're all in this together.

18. Thank you
usually I can muster up my fighting spirit. But I just get so discouraged by our "leadership" at times. If I threw things at the television every time I wanted to throw things at the television, I would be making Best Buy stock go up all by my lonesome.

4. and the walls of babylon crumble
sadly with us inside. I must do my best to delay that end, and inform everyone i can of what is happening. i agree that it will take something drastic for many people to see the light. i just hope it isnt the end of the republic.

5. Problem is,
there wouldn't be enough people to turn against them to easily overwhelm them. We'd have another civil war on our hands.

6. the repugs don't want to over turn Roe v Wade...
because then they would have nothing to yell or be "inflamed" about. If they wanted to, why have they not done it, how long have they had full control now?

7. I think this is much the same shit as I heard in 2000

------------
Bush and Gore are the same corporatist sellouts. Let them elect
Bush, we need things to get really bad so we can get true progressives
elected (or to start the revolution if they steal the elections).
------------

Trouble is, before things get "better" they have to get much
much worse. The the process of getting worse and then better
is often violent and destructive. I would rather that we avoided
that phase.

This is like saying "man the nazis are crazy mofo's, it looks like
Hitler is going to win the election... well shit, let's go ahead
and let him become dictator so everyone will know, finally, how
evil a bastard he really is and they will finally come to their
senses and overthrow him."

Except... millions died in the process... AND (this is the kicker),
they never DID rise up and throw his ass out.

So why do we want them to install a theocracy in the US again?

8. That approach NEVER works.
A lot of people in Germany said the same thing about the Nazis. Oh, they are too extreme, once they are in power people will come to their senses. Yeah, right.

Or how about Reagan? That senile buffoon got elected twice, and I still remember hearing people saying, oh just let him push his supply side bullshit through. The people won't tolerate the big debts and the scary saber rattling. Yeah, right.

Or how about the Chimperor in 2000? Same deal again.

You let them stack the court with clowns like Thomas and Scalia and you are condemning at least a generation to a repressive society. And their is nothing you can do about it until they die off.

10. What are your constructive suggestions then?
Depend on Nan Aaron and Ralph Meas to save us?

Depend on the Senate Democrats, who have done such a wonderful job so far, to save us?

What?

14. Fight, Fight, Fight!
Do I think a fight would be successful? Not really because too many DINO's are afraid of their shadow. But, we need to support those who will fight.

Use the fight as platform to let people know what is happening. Not fighting is viewed as tacit approval. And that view has killed the Democrats on issue after issue. It neutralizes future objections. It's a trick the Repugs use time after time, like on the IWR vote. They spun that into outright approval of anything the Chimperor has done and the Democrats never beat that rap.

16. I'm tired of fighting
because I don't think our leaders fight smart.

I cringe when I listen to Nancy Pelosi. CRINGE. Where are the people who can hit homeruns and stay on message?

(don't mind me, i'm feeling crabby tonight)

12. Do not go quietly into the night.
Perhaps we are headed for that inevitable destination as a nation. Those with vision and understanding must continue to raise the clarion call. Kick and scratch and yell and fight.

We. must.

19. Believe me...
... I understand EXACTLY how you feel. I'm completely disgusted with our Senate in particular and have not one ounce of faith that they can do anything at all about the SC appointments, they will be steamrolled again.

So then comes the part of me that looks for a silver lining in each cloud. Your scenario is the only silver lining I can come up with. I completely agree, if the right wing ever actually gets what they claim they want, the American people will turn against them with a vengeance they cannot imagine in their insular little thoughts. But it would be a high price.
