Fox News slammed over 'callous' line

Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday July 9, 2005
The Guardian

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News channel was under fire yesterday for
comments by some of its leading journalists in response to the
London bombs.

Speaking about the reaction of the financial markets, Brit Hume, the
channel's Washington managing editor, said: "Just on a personal basis
... I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I
thought 'hmm, time to buy'."

The host of a Fox News programme, Brian Kilmeade, said the attacks
had the effect of putting terrorism back on the top of the G8's
agenda, in place of global warming and African aid. "I think that
works to our advantage, in the western world's advantage, for people
to experience something like this together, just 500 miles from
where the attacks have happened."

<snip>

Media Matters for America, a watchdog and frequent critic of Fox,
criticised the comments on its website. "I think it's absolutely
sickening three Fox anchors had such callous reactions to the
bombings that took dozens of lives," said the Jamison Foser, of
the group.

4. The talking heads on Faux news are pathetic heartless jagoffs
They have no more concern for the deaths of the human beings in the stories they are reporting than ants found on the bottoms of their shoes.

I'd rather watch paint dry than watch them.

6. Callous? Sure. But, they're saying in public what WH officials can't.
Thank you Brit & Co. for giving us an honest snapshot of the neocon mind.

Of course they're celebrating! "This works to our advantage . . . time to buy!." Sick, heartless bastards.

"I won't comment on a Fox story because they are not in the news business. They're a shill for the Republicans" Or some thing like that. Score another bullseye for Howard.

13.  My Apologies to London for the Insensitive PRICKS at FOX “News”
http://www.conjur.com/blog/2005/07/09/my-apologies-to-london-for-the-insensitive-pricks-at-fox-news/

In the immediate aftermath of Thursday’s vicious attacks upon innocent civilians in London, several FOX “News” anchors/analcysts decided to exhibit themselves in their true form: complete and utter fucking assholes.

I want to express my deepest apologies to all of those in London (and elsewhere) who were affected by this senseless and cowardly attack (and to all Parisians) for the following comments made by false patriots here in America:

The following exchange between Fox News host Brian Kilmeade and Fox News business contributor and substitute host Stuart Varney occurred during breaking news coverage of the attacks on London subways and buses on the July 7 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends:

KILMEADE: And he made the statement, clearly shaken, but clearly determined. This is his second address in the last hour. First to the people of London, and now at the G8 summit, where their topic Number 1 –believe it or not– was global warming, the second was African aid. And that was the first time since 9-11 when they should know, and they do know now, that terrorism should be Number 1. But it’s important for them all to be together. I think that works to our advantage, in the Western world’s advantage, for people to experience something like this together, just 500 miles from where the attacks have happened.

VARNEY: It puts the Number 1 issue right back on the front burner right at the point where all these world leaders are meeting. It takes global warming off the front burner. It takes African aid off the front burner. It sticks terrorism and the fight on the war on terror, right up front all over again.

KILMEADE: Yeah.

…………………………………………………………………………………………

“My first thought when I heard - just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, ‘Hmmm, time to buy.’”
- Fox News’ Brit Hume, 7/7/05

…………………………………………………………………………………………

GIBSON: By the way, just wanted to tell you people, we missed — the International Olympic Committee missed a golden opportunity today. If they had picked France, if they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn’t worry about terrorism. They’d blow up Paris, and who cares?

…………………………………………………………………………………………

Fox News contributing correspondent Simon Marks distinguished between Arabs and “regular” Londoners, in reporting on the scope of the attacks, as the weblog Daily Kos noted. From Fox News’ July 7 breaking news coverage between 9 and 10 a.m. ET:

MARKS: “It is an area that has a very large Arab population. Surrounding that station, a large number of Middle Eastern restaurants. So, it’s a further indication, if in fact these attacks were carried out by Al Qaeda-affiliated cells, that these people are, if necessary, prepared to spill Arab blood in addition to the blood of regular — of non-Arab people living in London

If any of these fucking assholes still have a job come Monday morning, FOX “News” should be forced off the air. This is just completely and utterly disgusting.

19. Thanks, but we know that you have nothing to apologise for
Murdoch forced his bigot-pandering channel on you - there's nothing you can do to stop it, unfortunately. It would take a generational change in the (minority, but still worryingly large) section of ignorant Americans that support Fox News, to get it to become a proper news channel.

15. LET FOX NEWS KNOW THAT YOU ARE DISGUSTED WITH LONDON COVERAGE
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 09:37 AM by Douglas Carpenter
Just when you thought Fox News couldn't get any lower--Fox News host Brian Kilmeade and Fox News business contributor and substitute host Stuart Varney seemed to be reveling in how the bombing in London "works to our advantage". Gloating in how it puts the "war on terrorism" on the front burner and aid to Africa and global warming on the back burner.

See the Media Matters report and watch the Fox News video at this link:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200507070005

If you thought the coverage of these horrific events couldn't get lower than that--Brit Hume reacted by saying that his first reaction to hearing about the bombings in London was to look at the futures market and say to himself "hmm-time to buy".

16. I noticed The Guardian reported this.
We don't even know we've been insulted if we try to get our news domestically. When a US paper picks it up, I'll be encouraged, but as we've seen with the DSM memo, our media picks and chooses the news.

21. Most stupid Fox line I heard the other day:
Fox anchorman (can't remember his name) while interviewing a Democratic senator, said: "There's a big plus to our fighting the war in Iraq. Our soldiers are getting great training in how to fight the people who hate us." The Democrat responded with a sort of shocked look, and then said: "Well, i wouldn't say it's an advantage to be forced to get on-the-job training."
