Police shot bombers' reports New Zealander
New Zealander working for Reuters in London says two colleagues witnessed the unconfirmed shooting by police of two apparent suicide bombers outside the HSBC tower at Canary Wharf in London.

The New Zealander, who did not want to be named, said the killing of the two men wearing bombs happened at 10.30am on Thursday (London time).

Following the shooting, the 8000 workers in the 44-storey tower were told to stay away from windows and remain in the building for at least six hours, the New Zealand man said.

1. If true, I'll raise a pint in praise of British marksmanship.
Bullets and terrorists always make for a productive meeting.

2. Amen.
When did they start arming London police? I thought they didn't carry sidearms as a rule.

3. Sounds like urban legend to me
It doesn't make sense. 8000 people told to stay away from the windows and stay put are going to TALK ABOUT IT. Also, why keep this story secret? It would seem to be something to brag about, not keep secret.

By the way, take out that stray apostrophe--it leaves us wondering why the police would shoot reports.

4. People talking about stuff, and it being on the news are two
very different things, as we all know only too well.

6. You're probably right - urban legend
but worth filing away in the "Things I read" drawer. Clearly, if there's any truth to this, then someone knows who the perps were. And if they're 'home-grown', rather than Al Qaeda. The implications would be immense.

5. Probably BS..........
If you see a cop with a gun in the UK (other than at the airports) a lot of people would be talking about it.

7. One of the many reasons this story doesn't make sense
Right now I'm putting this down to an unsubstantiated rumor spread by an anonymous chap from New Zealand.

8. True that general duties police in London
are not armed but there are a significant number who are armed and who are on the road around the clock on call. Having said that I believe this could be an urban legend. I've heard it recently but haven't been able to get it confirmed by my contacts (such as they are).

10. Unconfirmed shooting, unidentified source .... blah blah blah
All carried by our on the spot reporter in New Zealand. The media here in the UK were interviewing Londoners at Canary Wharf who returned to work yesterday. None mentioned this incident. The BBC have published videophone evidence that suggests all the bombs exploded within a pretty tight time schedule yet this event is supposed to have occurred over an hour after the main attacks. What happened, did the bombers oversleep ?

12. There is a good chance this is untrue,
but it is not implausible. I imagine the authorities regard Canary Wharf as a major and soft target that they might send protection to preemptively in the case of an attack, or attacks elsewhere in the city.

13. Fascinating!
And it does raise a lot of questions too.

1. I find it amazing that unarmed police managed to do this. Although given the time span from the first bomb to this happening, it makes sense that some police (perhaps special forces) were out, and were armed.

2. If this is true, and this is meant to be an AlQaeda operatives, then I would like to know when did AQ begin using suicide bombers? That isn't something common for AQ.

Thanks for posting this, but it is highly likely it is gonna be one of the many phantom stories that are gonna come out about these bombings.
