Journalism Professor Uses Outfoxed & oreilly-sucks.com

I got an e-mail from a journalism professor who told me she uses the DVD of Outfoxed on her students as an example of what journalism isn't. She also said my website provided a valuable service to her, she said they do an in-class exercise on libel law using my transcript of the O'Reilly/Glick interview.

She said, It really brings what could be a rather boring subject to life for them, and it's been the highlight of the semester. She wanted to know my website is helping educate future journalists of America.

Here is the e-mail she sent me, the e-mail addy and the names have been edited for privacy reasons. All I can say is the school is well known, and it is in a southern red state.

Steve,

Your web site provided a valuable service for me last year. I teach undergraduate journalism at the University of Xxxxxxxxx, and the last few semesters I have been showing my students the DVD "Outfoxed" as an excellent example of what journalism ISN'T.

After watching the movie, we do an in-class exercise on libel law,
using from your site the transcript of O'Reilly's show with Jeremy
Glick, the young man whose father had died during 9/11 and who had
subsequently signed an anti-war petition, and who of course O'Reilly
proceeded to lambaste and demonize on-air and afterward. It really
brings what could be a rather boring subject to life for them, and it's been the highlight of the semester. Just wanted to let you know you are helping educate future journalists of America!

I wrote her back asking if I could publish her e-mail to me and with a few other comments, here is that reply.

Steve,

Yes, you can certainly use my e-mail if you like. Please do edit out my e-mail address, as well as my name and the university's name. It's
tough enough times for us academic/journos these days, especially in
this red state, where one of our local state legislators (don't even
get me started) has introduced a bill to set up a grievance process for college students who feel they've been unfairly treated in class by "liberal professors." Seems the theocracy won't rest until they control everyone's thought processes. Hi-yi-yi.

I do look at "Newshound" every now and then -- another great service -- but O'Reilly is so insane I really can't stand to read much of or about him. But I will check in with o'reilly-sucks from time to time.

By the way, I've had at least two students switch their majors from public relations to journalism after viewing "Outfoxed," they were so outraged by the Glick episode. I take comfort from knowing that just about all my students recognize what a blowhard jerk O'Reilly is.

cheers --

2. That is very cool.
Hopefully there's still enough minds out there that crave the TRUTH and not what's spoonfed to them by the corporate media.

3. Good job!
And another example of why whatever we do, it is important we do it. We never know the full extent of our influence!

:toast: to your help in wising up some future journalists!

4. Wow!
That's wonderful--you must be really proud, to know that you're helping with the education of people who might not otherwise understand what journalism is supposed to be!

5. The difference
between a liberal journalist and a conservative journalist is -
a liberal journalist is a journalist first and a liberal second.
A conservative journalist is a conservative first and a journalist second.

Looks like they're growing a whole new crop of conservative journalists down there.

6. no.
that's one of the differences between a good journalist and a bad journalist.
For some reason it seems to be easier for bad conservative journalists to have success.

12. Great Job...
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 06:06 PM by Tommymac
Now if only we could get the future media business execs of America who will hire these students, pay their salaries and eventually corrupt them because of the financial hold they have on them to learn some ethics...

I truly believe most reporters are basically good...but they have to make a living and most don't have the means or the will to fight the system since in today's media world the job market is controlled by 7 cartels and there are few independent jobs available for those who buck the system.

We need IWT.
