1. Well, were they?
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 05:32 PM by Stuckinthebush
I didn't get to see it.

On edit: I see the DU poll shows Dean and Edwards as winners (as of now - small number responding).

4. I hate to say this, being a Clark supporter
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 05:37 PM by Girlfriday
but Kucinich said more of what I like then any of the others. And as always, Sharpton had the best one liners: "I'm here because of a failed trade policy." Clark really disappointed me, I'll give him another chance because he just did get into the race, but I wasn't impressed at all. I do think this was the best debate so far, it covered more of the issues near and dear to my heart.

on edit: I do agree that Edwards had a very strong showing, I'll be paying closer attention to him from now on.

24. Who was the gentleman supposed to be?
I didn't get to see the debate; no cable here, but I've been reading all this board that Clark didn't do as well as expected. Why?

20. Clark may have only just announced but he has had ample prep time
and he was able to do it at his leisure and without the additional burdon of campaigning and fundraising. I'm not willing to give him slack on this. The new fighter come in to the fight in the 4th round, he ought to be rested and very prepared.

3. Nobody "debated."
The format didn't really allow for a debate, and it won't until the field is narrowed down to a handful.

One clear loser in this debate though: George W. Bush.

:-)

I'll watch it at 9:00, but I love your attitude!

George W. Bush is the loser, the Democrats are the winners.

8. Interesting.
Lieberman is usually the bottom-feeder in these things (in my opinion) but even he did better than Gephardt this time. Gep was shrill and self-congratulatory, and a total turnoff. Congratulations, Lieberman! You weren't dead last this time.

11. I thought Gep really made himself
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 05:54 PM by diamondsoul
look like a jerk going after Dean. Dean, otoh handled that exceptionally well. He's still not my pick but he gets kudos for that one. I liked his strong statement "NOBODY up here deserves to be compared to Newt Gingrich!". Smart move as well turning it into an "us" vs. *the bad guy* situation.

Then again I'm not thrilled with Gep's tactics given that his national campaign site has a whole page devoted to smearing Dean. Not necessary if Gep's platform is better than Dean's.

Clark is really disappointing me so far. I genuinely like him based on past experience but I tell you, I don't think he thought long enough about getting into this race. **Edit to clarify- I really expected him to come out with some strong issues statements, and I wish he'd taken the time to put those together while he was makign his decision, just for preparations sake.

Myself, even missing the first hour (on the phone with one of our volunteers), I thought Kucinich was fantastic. I'll be watching the replay tonight to see how he looked in the first half.

13. The debate made me
so proud to be a Democrat. What an intelligent, committed field.

For this debate, I feel Dean was the strongest today, being picked on by the others and doing well in rebuttal - but the eyes were on Clark and he held his own - thereby possibly holding the poll lead as well.

Therfore I think Clark "won" by not "losing". No mistakes despite shortage of specifics. This will change the longer he is in, but no further setbacks because of this appearance.

We shall see in the polls soon.

15. I'm reading throught the transcript and it's amazing how the media try
to control the tone of the debate.

First of all, it is unfukingbelievable that they open with a question for Clark about whether he's a Democrat, and then Williams says "I'm going to exercise a little discretion...Dean, whould you rebut that please". The RW media whores like Limbaugh have spent the last 24 hours trying to encourage Dean to take down Clark and then Williams steps out of format and encourages this? That puts Williams on par with Limbaugh. Is that what's going on here? Limbaugh is going to dictate the tone and rules for the debates?

"Discretion" my ass. They're exercising their perogative to be RW media whores for Bush.

17. More evidence of Whoreishness:
Bulger asked the question to Edwards about whether he would vote for the 87 billion. Whe Edwards finished answering, Willimas asked Bulger if SHE had a "rebuttal" for the senator. I didn't realize that the questioners were debating with the candidates. I bet that was a big Freudian slip. Characerizing the questioners as being in a confrontational relationship with the candidates -- especially Edwards -- is very revealing.

26. I Thought It Was A Debate About Economics Not Party I D
Wes Clark answered it fine...

The core Democratic issues

choice

gay rights

affirmative action

social justice.....

After that we can disagree all we want and move left, right, and center....

I don't care... Truth crushed to Earth will rise again... The right wing has put a bulls eye on Wes Clark....

They also had one on JFK, MLK , and RFK... Sometimes they can't control the forces they unleash...

21. It was
poorly done. We need them to be longer so there is more time for each of them. I was happy that Kucinich got to speak a little more than usual but it was at the expense of some of the others. I am not a Clark fan but I thought given what he was give to talk about he did OK. I like him better than I did before. They are going to control this and it will always be unfair I am afraid. Where are the fair media people? Extinct?

28. No big surprises.
Only mild fireworks...

Gephart: Dean is Gingrich
Dean: I'm not Gingrich

Other than that nothing special. It was good, though. Nice to see ten candidates who can speak in coherent sentences, a stark contrast from *.

Clark didn't get called on as much as I thought he would have.
