Toyota building new plant in Ontario- untrained workforce in AL
http://www.cbc.ca/cp/business/050630/b0630102.html

"He said Nissan and Honda have encountered difficulties getting new plants up to full production in recent years in Mississippi and Alabama due to an untrained - and often illiterate - workforce. In Alabama, trainers had to use "pictorials" to teach some illiterate workers how to use high-tech plant equipment."

"The educational level and the skill level of the people down there is so much lower than it is in Ontario," Fedchun said."

Is our children learning? $20-25/hr jobs with full benefits and pensions are overrated anyway. At least homosexuals can't marry, right?:sarcasm:

My sympathy for Southern Dems who didn't vote for this, and don't deserve this.

4. Based on the article, I would assume that
their experience with Huntsville is a big reason WHY they built in Canada. :eyes:

The single payer health care helps also.

6. maybe an opportunity for a literate yankee looking to relocate...
to warmer climes-

a real-life high school diploma puts you on fast-track to shift foreman- pick up a couple classes in remedial ed- and you could be in charge of human resources...

let the new carpet-bagging begin...!
(although you may want to wait until the kids have graduated)

9. It's tripe, of course.
But the urge to bash southerners is quite strong among some DUers.

8. I agree but you forgot to mention the big thing - health care. Toyota
doesn't have to take care of that or pay into it because Canada has National Health Care. It makes for more productive plants.

Public school education is where it is at. And a government that actively tries to break up pockets of poverty.

It matters a great deal. Sorry for you. Sorrier still for those people in Alabama who live in the 'richest country in the world' and don't get a decent education.

10. Yep, school is where its at
I had a discussion with someone at work complaining about the schools and the high property taxes they pay. He said "Why are the taxes in NJ 5 times what they are down South?".

I told him education costs money, and to think about all the good jobs that are in NJ because it has a large educated base.

If the electorate in Southern states worried more about math and science and less about putting disclaimers on science books, maybe the good jobs would come there also.

12. Toyota in Huntsville is going to be hiring 300 more workers
The best thing for Toyota to do is hire Canadians that are here receiving superior health care.

14. Health Care PERIOD! Preventive medicine and all. People have that.
And the newest drugs and all. Incidentally - America is loosing its position in the science fields. Other countries are doing amazing research too.

11. Bush continues to do nothing about our failing economy.
In Yahoo's headlines this morning: US falling behind in science and engineering. Unless American companies hire people educated in science and engineering, we'll continue to fall.

Things are so bad on the employment front everywhere. The only growth is the bankruptcy industry.
