Queen Elizabeth can do something Chimpy can't, or daren't
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 06:17 PM by Godlesscommieprevert
Today was the 60th anniversary of VE Day in the UK. Despite just going through a horrible terrorist attack, the parade went on as planned, thousands marching and watching, and the Queen and Prince Philip rode down the Mall in an open horse-drawn carriage.

There are two thoughts. One is that no president would dare to do this in this country merely because of the availability of guns and wackjobs ready and willing to use them.
But that being said, Shrimp would never have dared to be in the carriage with her without a Black Hawk helipcopter hovering overhead like the one he wanted over the palace last time he stayed there, and he'd want every member of the crowd to have gone through metal detectors at the very least.

Class shows.

I think so too. I also last week was watching the local news and they showed London and showed Prince Charles sitting with a young man and talking to him in the hospital. They seemed to enjoy each other. Watching that makes you warm and fuzzy inside. You never see video's or photo's of Bush visiting with soliders and remember Cindy Sheehan's experience of meeting Bush. Truly creepy. I also remember reading here on DU someone made a post that told how people on the MSM networks were freaking out because the British people went on about their lives and weren't scared shitless like we were on 9/11 and of course they were trying to compare the two. :eyes:

6. Your comment about the different reactions
I think we are a country of drama queens ( and kings) and that the media promote that attitude. We are also so self-centered that we think, " oh this is the worst thing in the whole world and this is the worst thing to happen in the history of the world."... no sense of history either.

18. I'm going to take issue with some of what you said.
The people who were closest to the 9/11 attacks, i.e. the good citizens of New York City and Washington DC, rose to the occaision with every bit of class and determination as the good citizens of London.

My husband works a few blocks from ground zero. He saw the explosion when the second plane hit the tower.

As soon as the authorities let people back in, businesses and government agencies were back open for business determined to return to normality amidst the ashes and the stench of smoldering rubble.

Yes, our politicians have used these attacks shamelessly and many people who have no relationship to the horror that was 9/11 except that they saw it on TV have gone along with the politicians but please give credit where credit is due.

15. Do you have a link regarding when Cindy Sheehan met Bush
or can you re-tell it?

I haven't read that one and would like to.

Thanks!

19. Occasionally they release one or two photos, or at least
I think I've seen something like that. Of course, they make sure it is someone who swallowed the whole pitcher of KoolAid or maybe they are jacked up on good drugs.

I don't mind that they aren't publishing photos like that. Bush would look like himself -- the opportunist-- in them.

7. She can also do big hats with matching suits.
I don't think * could pull it off. Although the matching tie kinda reminds me of the prom.

What is George looking at?

She is not even bothering to look his way.

Hvae you noticed, the arranged to have his tie match her suit. They figured it would make it seemed like they agreed with each other - NOT.

12. Prouder than ever to be of British ancestry.
Carrying on in the wake of tragedy, letting those responsible know that fear will not rule them. As you said, W would dread the idea of being in an open carriage, let alone having that many people around him who haven't been screened and/or coached.

Queen Elizabeth learned how to show strength and dignity during crisis from her parent's example in WWII. You stare it down. You find the guilty. And you never use the terror they wish to impose as a weapon against your own people.

14. Just to get one fact straight:
Sunday 10th was not the aniversary of VE day. The war in Europe, as the lady herself said in the first frase of her speech, ended in May 60 years ago. That war in the Pacific, she said, ended in september. Apparantly, the date was chosen as being more or less half-way between the two (and, no doubt, to coincide with the closure of BLiar's G8 summit, plus, as it so happens, to provide patriotic pageantry post-bombing).

She also said something like that "Europeans, at least" still try to live up to the ideals fought for: no mention of "British" or "Allies" or you people over there.

Thanks very much.

as opposed to being in "hiding," or as they like to call it "respecting the twins' privacy."

20. Somewhat akin to George the Greater and Iraq fiasco I
Just prior to the start, there was shown on the evening news, Saddam walking down the street in Baghdad with people firing guns into the air. Saddam stopped, grabbed a pistol from some guys hand and cranked off several shots into the air. Shortly after that, George I went to visit the troops in Kuwait, the military made them turn in their ammunition.

21. The Queen
can do that because she is not really involved in running the government. The title of Queen gives her status but no real power just like the rest of the royal family. That separates her from responsibility for the actions of the government.
