You gotta love what Al said
One of the three times there was applause in the audience tonight. He looked at Clark and said something to the effect: I welcome Clark to NY and welcome him to the Dem Party because it's better to have someone who just came to the party than those on this stage who have been acting more like Republicans. Wes liked that. I liked that. Sharpton, if I thought you had a chance,I swear you would be my man.

4. Sounded like a shot to me.
Iow, "Glad you could join us" or words to that effect. Or, "Now that you've decided you're a Dem..." I could be completely wrong, though.

6. Yes indeed! Proper respect to the Reverend Sharpton.
That was a great moment. And did you notice the sincere smile that Wes was giving? Good for Al. Zingin' joe didn't hurt, either.
I'm gonna watch it again.

7. Rev, ya did good
More than good. Great.

And I didn't think the quote ("don't mind
new Dems as much as I mind Dems acting like
Repugs for years~" ) was directed
at Clark at all. I assumed it was directed
at Leiberman, and maybe Gephardt. Of course
I could be projecting.

Once again:

Rev Sharpton

Dean/Kuchinich/Edwards :yourock:

Clark :kick:

(Good start but next time be more specific Sir.
No excuses about being the newbie.
This is the major leagues.)

8. Also "Brother Howard"
(Referring to Dean.) Loved his comparison of the slave trade to today's trade problems. Who can forget "Slappin' the Donkey" at a previous debate? Al's a remarkable orator.

10. Love what Al just said (watching the replay)
He's right: It's not a tax cut, it's a tax shift, and the "cut" means higher taxes everywhere else. Why does Kerry and some of the others keep acting like income tax is the only tax people pay?

11. You're misquoting him. There was no "on this stage" in what he said --
that wouldn't be Al's style. He even specifically warned against personal attacks like that.

12. Sorry, but you're incorrect.
He did include people currently up on stage with them. It was a very pointed comment and it was obviously directed at one of the other nine.

From the transcript at washingtonpost.com:

"And don't be defensive about just joining the party. Welcome to the party. It's better to be a new Democrat that's a real Democrat, than a lot of old Democrats up here that have been acting like Republicans all along."

13. I don't see anything about "on this stage" there, do you?
I see the words "up here," but when he said that, the intonation did not seem to be pointing to others "on the stage."

As I said: had he done that, it would have been interpreted as a direct attack against others on the stage. It was clearly not taken that way, BY ANYONE, and Sharpton himself cautioned the others against making any such personal attacks.

14. Read the post yourself.

"said something to the effect"

Does that sound like he's quoting? No, that's called paraphrasing.

Please read it again if you're still confused. It's not a quote.

What the hell else could "up here" mean? Geez. It was quite obvious to apparently everyone but you (based on other comments on DU this evening) that Sharpton was referring to the other candidates. Brian Williams wasn't "up here". The audience wasn't "up here". The people asking the questions weren't "up here". Who the hell else could he have been talking about?? Who?? I can't even believe I have to explain that to you.

If you're going to expect perfection out of other posters and critique them down to individual words, at least bother to read what they write first.

Edit: And, frankly, it was quite in line with other comments that he made. He's very quick and has a very sharp wit. He used it quite skillfully in this debate.

15. what we need is a candidate with Sharpton's tongue . . .
Kucinich's platform, Clark's credentials, Dean's popularity, Braun's smile, Gephart's labor unions, Kerry's liberal voting record, Edwards' looks, Graham's home state, and Lieberman's voters from 2000 . . . yeah, that's the ticket . . .

oh . . . and someone tell Clark that foot-wide power ties are no longer "in" . . .

17. That was great.
But I also liked when he said something to the effect of:

Before we're through we'll say Clinton walked on water!

Sharpton has to have some kind of future in public service.
