"I bet ppl that voted for Bush feel pretty stupid about now" |
|
That is what can be heard if you pass me in a store, bank, or other public area as I pretend to talk on my cell phone.
I'm pushing the message that people will think you're stupid if you supported Bush. This is the kind of social pressure that works.
Social pressure, not increased punishment, is what took drunk driving from a 1970s sport into a 1980s evil act.
Social pressure is what has removed the 'cool' form smoking cigarettes.
Social pressure can be used to sell the truth.
Having it come in the form of an overheard cell phone conversation takes away the resistance people have of being 'preached to'.
I usually continue with "yeah, now that all the bad news is coming out about their scandals, most people are finally realizing that Bush and company are bad for America"
It's a small thing, but could be a powerful thing.

But as long as Bush does not receive a blow job while in the white house, these people will go on supporting him blindly even when the rest of us see the truth

I think we should spend over $70Million dollars and 6 years to find out. ;)

It's a simple statement of fact that not many at DU want to see Hillary run. Many feel sold out by some of the conservative positions she's taken. But I'm willing to bet that IF she runs, and IF she gets the nomination, she'll still get 95%+ of the DU vote.

That the media is driving this alleged Hillary support by grassroots Dems, even though I, personally, see no evidence here or in real life.
However, I'm doubting she'll get 95 percent of the DU vote in the primaries. Maybe in the general election, but not the primaries.

you write it as "you're."
When you are trying to use the word as a possessive, you write it this way: "your books."
Get it? Possessive: your, contraction for "you are": you're.
Now go write fifteen sentences correctly using the two spellings of the word and report back here with them when you are done.

A lot of Bush voters I know have really mixed feelings. Nobody likes to discover they've been fooled.
So I don't rub it in, though sometimes I really want to, and I know they'd rub it into me if the tables were turned.
I give people straight sensible talk. I let 'em know that most progressives and liberals are really on their side. I show them we have better plans for living together, not at each other's expense.

From what I can see in my immediate sphere, some thoughtful types have remained with the GOP, either hoping to take it back from the neo-cons or otherwise enjoying being on the "winning" team regardless of views.
I am also somewhat surprised that your "overheard" badgering is reaching these "sheep" you find out and about.
But hey, if it's working for you, great. You recruit sheep. I'll work on thoughtful ones. And maybe together we can deliver some serious votage in 2006 and 2008.

55. It's not so much about selling them |
|
as making them think a little about their own party line
most bush supporters I have met are not very informed and they just 'go along with the crowd'
my goal is to make 'the crowd' not as single minded as it is in their mind
ppl fear ridicule, and this is a great way of confronting their beliefs without confronting them personally, which makes it more about the idea than about them
i see the looks i get, and that tells me it is working
even if all i do is get them to bitch about what i was saying to their co-workers, it creates an opportunity for discussion. they may just tell a coworker that will say something like 'well, i voted for bush, but he sure has turned out to be less than i had hoped'

For those who voted Red just to be part of the mob, I like showing them how our mob is better than their old mob.
Really, there's a lot of different personalities out there. No one method is going to persuade all of them.
In fact, the ideal argument is an ad hominem argument (meaning "to the man"), in which you make your conclusion fit into the other person's priorities and values. (This is unrelated to "ad hominem attack", which is a logical fallacy.)
Get the joiners. We need their votes too.

Piss them off, make them think, whatever it takes.
I also target Christians, because like it or not, this admin has used them, and when he falls, he'll likely take much of that comfortable conservative attitude in this nation down WITH him. Give Christians a bad name, eventually far worse than he already has. Just another fear to give them, a realistic fear.
Forget prayer in school, you people. Any and all OTHER religious beliefs will look better than Christianity before this admin is done. Siding with this admin has done more damage to Christianity than anything else I can think of short of the crusades. With as many as they may have killed and ruined in this war, and with depleted uranium perhaps having far reaching effects for many generations, they will be remembered as vicious killers of other religions. There will be so many mained and disfigured people to remember them, for generations, for potentially millions of people.
I don't think they're going to recover. Christianity is DONE. I'm so sorry for my Christian friends. They think things are going well for them, at least, aside from all the other problems. They think, well, at least it's Christian. They're happy with their Christian president. But sadly, in the end, there won't be much to hold your head up about being Christian.
Persecuted forevermore. As they always say they are. A self-fulfilling prophesy?
It's going to happen. It's just a matter of time. Amen.

I don't limit my topics to just Bush. I talk about the folly of the drug war, the selfishness of SUV ownership, etc.
Example:
"Hey man, you find me a car yet?"
"That's not a car, that's an SUV"
"No way, I live in the city, having an SUV would be stupid!"
"I don't care about the gas mileage, it's about cornering"
"I don't want to be the asshole holding up traffic while I have to stop to take a right turn"
"Find me an old 3 series beemer, those corner great and I won't have to look like an idiot driving a 4x4 truck on pavement"
"Maybe if you gave it to me for free, but then I'd just sell it and buy something that makes sense"
but then again, im an asshole, i like to piss ppl off when it's a good cause

I'm pushing the message that people will think you're stupid if you supported Bush. This is the kind of social pressure that works.
It's too late for those who supported Bush; therefore I suggest the following alternate message:
People will think you're stupid if you are still supporting Bush.
Offer them the hope of redemption. It's never too late for a sinner to mend his ways.
