Thinking of moving off of US Soil
Hi everyone,

I am unhappy with the state of this country since the Bush reelection and am thinking of moving.

My fear is that if I move to Canada for example, that it is only going to be more of the same because the U.S. seem to have control over everything. I was curious, how many here have moved out of the country since Bush and co have come into power? And if you've had more success and happiness since?

Thanks in advance for your response.

1. Stay and fight!
I'm only keeping the expatriate option open for a "out in the streets rounding people up" scenario. That hasn't happened yet. Fuck the Republicans, this is MY country!

3. If they try and draft my son, I'm leaving too.
I'm considering Ireland if moving becomes necessary. I was just over there. THey are looking for people in the constuction trades to move in. The population is highly educated i.e. advanced degrees as college is free to Ireland citizens. The trades have suffered greatly and there is a deficit in the people available to do this type of work. Ireland is the fastest growing economy in Europe by recent reports and construction tradesmen/women are desparately needed to build ... Just a thought.

7. Do you have to make a job application to live in Ireland?
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 12:54 PM by in_cog_ni_to

24. Windy, you may find this link helpful!
This is THE BEST web site for those wishing to leave the states. They have EVERYTHING you need to know. Here's a link on Ireland I found there, but be sure to check out the whole site. I have spent hours upon hours there's! You'll love it. Very informative!

21. I think Ireland is like the UK - if you want to emigrate,
you're supposed to either bring in a needed skill, or be able to prove that you have enough funds behind you that you won't come in and start making claims on the welfare system.

That's the theory, anyway. How it works in practice anymore, I don't know. Good luck to you. I've never regretted emigrating.

2. Welcome flowerchild!
I've chosen to stay and fight the fascists on the soil on which I was born. Canada is nice, but if your powder is dry, and your aim true, stay and fight with us!

9. Same here
I have often thought about it but then again I don't have the money or anything like that to move. I'd rather stay and die. People have died for my rights and for that Constiution/Bill of Rights we have. To me, personally, if anybody is a US citizen and doesn't defend the Constiution/Bill of Rights is a traitor to me.

14. "Welcome flowerchild!"
Thanks. I want to stay but I just don't have the fight left in me. I feel like we've lost control over our government and all the money we pay into our taxes is going to fund the war in Iraq.

The troops don't seem to coming home any time soon and I must pay my taxes or I go to jail. So the only option is to move or else continue to bear the guilt of fighting a war I do not believe in.

18. Keep an ear to the ground, don't panic
I fight the tax man legally, I reduced my expenses to the point I no longer need much of an income to survive. I don't buy things I don't need, live simply and laugh at the tax man every year.

I assauge my guilt by taking every opportunity to educate my fellow Americans, In line at the post, grocery, free concerts in the park. At the tavern, lodge, hardware store. Neighbors, friends, people I pass on the street.

It is totally amazing the number of people who confide that they feel the same way, but are afraid. They feel their jobs, benefits, social standing may take a hit for speaking out, some fear for their very lives. That's fascism folks, nazi Germany.

I have an advantage, thru the miracle of PTSD I no longer fear death, or much of anything anymore. It enables me to be very effective.

Fear is the true enemy. Stay and fight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. You know you have to apply to Canada to get permission to live there?
You can't just move there. You may want to apply now if you're planning on moving there.

If the draft comes...we're outta here, but we're not going to Canada. :)

...everyday! for now i still have hope that we can vote in a democrat... not to mention some sanity (plus i wanna stick around long enough to see plame-gate crumble on the WH)! if shrub re-initiates the draft, i'm out (not that i'm so concerned with being drafted so much as that would be my breaking point).

as evidenced by the crashing recruitment rate, so it is up to us to stay here and fight to support the troops and end Chimpy's Iraq folly.

There are several expats on DU and they are
quite happy living in other countries.
Here is a link to THE internet source for
people investigating the idea.
They also have a global expatriot message board

11. Canada ain't easy to get into...
You pretty much need two of these three to be let in: a job waiting for you, and advanced degree, and fluency in French. And getting the job is tough unless you are already permitted to live there.

15. welcome to DU flowerchild
I'm a flower child from 69' and I've had reservations in the past few years about whether to stay or go, but as I think we are all going to do - I'm going to stay and fight, the more people that stand up and fight for our liberty the better chance we have at attaining success, long term success. The tide seems to be turning especially as of late, so I say to you to join the fight, this is your information center, your activist launching pad, join the fight and get moving - get vocal, bug your friends and your advisaries and you will be part of the solution. Again, welcome to DU!

17. Leave America and subject myself to Bush's insane foreign policy
Are you nuts?

Relatives of mine have fought for this country, in the Civil War to at least WWII. Countless other Americans have fought in the civil rights and labor movements, among other internal struggles.

I align myself with these people who decided to fight for what they believe this country is and what it can be.

happens, I ran into another family who also did the same thing, for the same reasons, but they did it 4 years ago.

Best move I've ever made!
