Most of them weren't about explosions, but expressions - of ideas.
"...blasts CAFTA"
"...blasts Bush"
"...blast Clinton"
Sort of minimizes the legitimate and accurate use describing explosions when the word becomes trivialized to describe everyone who criticizes anything.

That's definitely one of those 'news-only' uses. They could say 'slams', but that's almost as bad.
