5. Sarasota/Racism
I have to agree with this one.
That area of Sarasota is wealthy Republican territory who seem to resent students being there. Very narrow in outlook and taste. We used to make fun of the residents because of their stupidity. They used to threaten to call the police on us. Again, this was twenty years ago.

Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 09:57 PM by LalahLand
were forced to move because although they were very successful in other states like New York, apparently, blacks were not allowed to hold those types of positions in Sarasota. So yes, the racism in Sarasota can be overcome by MOVING. Thats all I have to say, good luck to your nephew GOODBYE!

By the way, I am not a racist flame baiter as you say, I take great offense at your irresponsible statement. You seem more like the racist.

22. I'm from there
I don't know much about how it is now since I've been gone over 40 years. However, my mother's family is from Bradenton, my father's family is from Sarasota. I was born and raised in Bradenton and graduated from Manatee High. Hence, I still have a lot of family in both Bradenton and Sarasota. I can honestly say with extreme sadness that no one can be more of a racist than most members of my family. The area used to be very redneck and I doubt if it's changed much with the natives. As far as New College goes, I know that it was resented when it first started and some of my relatives still live near the campus. I rarely hear them say anything positive about the college and the students who attend there. I can assure you that they are solidly in the Repub camp

I grew up with some of the sheriffs deputies there and they are still very redneck. I rarely go there since my dad moved to the Tampa area after my mom died.

One of my aunts had a "classy' restaurant there for many years. I asked her once why she never promoted her black embloyees and her response was that if they had better jobs they would be able to affore homes in the 'white' areas. some of her black employees worked for her for many years and never got much of a raise if they got one at all.

I asked he once if Bill Crosby or Quincy Jones bought one of the apartments in her ritzy Longboat Key Condos if she would be tolerant and her responce was if any black, no matter who they were, bought near her she's move within a month. I find a lot of my classmates still feelthe sam way as my aunt. Unfortunately, her children, my cousins, are the same way and they are teaching their children and grandchildren the same bigoted way. I don't have much in common with those still in the Sarasota/Bradenton area so I rarely see them and only hear from them via Christmas cards each year which is fine with me.

42. Institutional racism in Sarasota. uh huh
"among the worst I have ever witnessed in this country."

I have been to every one of the lower 48 states...I have lived in NC, SC, VA, TX, OR, MO, PA, and GA.

Sarasota is not even CLOSE to the worst "institutionalized racism" I have ever seen in this country. (For the record, that would be Oregon)

As far as your ill-mannered and ridiculous attempt to label a poster "racist" for inquiring about a college: you came across sounding like a pathetic, rude lout. Worse...since this thread was in reference to inquiring about a college, and you made a racist comment, you sound like an uneducated lout.

Therefore, I am going to play your stupid game and make a supposition about you:

You applied and were turned down for acceptance because you didn't meet the academic requirements for admission, and therefore decided the entire town of Sarasota sucks. I can't blame you, dear. Rejection stinks, eh? Particularly when said rejection is based on personal acheivment.

Now, ShakeyDave, I have to tell you: If I were 18-23, New College would be great!!! The only reason I was uncomfortable when I visited there was because of my age. I am afraid I wouldn't have any friends there....no peers. Otherwise, I would have sent in my application; I think it's a great college.

Stephanie

49. Oh misinformed one... what a fitting name
I want you to cut and paste the sentence where I called the author racist RIGHT NOW!

I have a degree and trust me, its not from a community college in Florida. Secondly, I'm not black. If you read my next post you would have seen that I lived in Sarasota (although briefly) and I know several families who experienced terrible racism in that city. So take your assumptions else where.

Which is what you seem to be implying by saying, "I have a degree and trust me, its not from a community college in Florida", don't know much about NC do ya'?

Also you ask where you call SD a racist, this is close enough for me considering the tone of your posts in this thread, "You seem more like the racist.".

Ciao.

For your edification here is the "WTF" post in question, or at least the one you responded to:

56. Sorry, I couldn't get to DU in time to cut and paste your comment
"right now."

But, I'm here now!

"the instituitional racism in Sarasota is among the worst I've witnessed in this country. I'm sure that doesn't matter or make any difference to you though. Carry on."

You set up your paragraph by stating that your opinion is that Sarasota as a whole is racist. Your next statement, "I'm sure that doesn't matter or make any difference to you though," tells us that in your opinion the poster in question is indifferent to a societal ill. Indifferce to racism in one's community is in a sense condoning it. Surely to God since you would advocate not moving to Sarasota based on your charge of racism, you would realize that.

As far as my assumptions, I said I was playing your supposition game; you could assume indifference on the part of the original poster. Therefore, by using the lack of information in your posts, I could use my imagination and assume that you are bitter towards NC because you weren't accepted.

See how this works? You set the tone by making assumptions, I read your post and replied in kind.

A note on community colleges that may eventually benefit you: the ones I have seen offer some very good English classes.

3. Some friends of mine went there...
I attended the art school there for 3 years so I knew lots of the students. They loved it but stressed that they had to be extremely self-motivated to accomplish anything. I read this as "driven". They were also very smart people with definate ideas and goals. Typical of students that age, they were also very idealistic/liberal. That's my experience, albeit, limited.
As far as individual classes/professors/curriculum I don't know much. But twenty years ago, it had a decent rep. I hoped this helped a little.

IMO - there are certainly WORSE colleges he could go to. It's not like they're in the middle of rural Alabama. The people are conservative in the area and for the most part white - BUT I don't see them being a whole lot worse than most affluent areas in the Midwest i.e. most are "secretly" racist - but cover it up. They don't have any KKK activity that I'm aware of.

Most of the people are just boring affluent retirees from the Midwest.

One drawback he'll have Katherine Harris as his Congresswoman...

35. New College Alum - Right Here
Yep, I graduated in 1990 from New College.

Don't ask me about the city in general -- I lived there four years, but that doesn't mean I know about the charges of racism in the larger community or anything. If you want info on the school itself -- academically, socially, etc. -- I can help you there. Warning: I have nothing but good things to say about it. My decision to go there was one of the best decisions I ever made. Seriously.

Academically, the school is very demanding; it requires a lot of independence and discipline on the part of the student. The school has, note, a fantastic record in terms of the later achievements of alumni, especially in terms of advanced degrees.

PM me for more if you wish more details. I was astonished to see the thread title! So few people know about New College..

I expect this thread should be moved to the Lounge, by the way.

47. I'm not sure what you mean
Sarasota is a very republican part of the state. Republicans have been known to be intolerant to blacks and homosexuals. Surely, this has to be taken into consideration when deciding whether to relocate there for school.

They are fair questions. It's narrow-minded and idiotic to bring out the PC bullshit when that is not the real world we live in.

You HEARD New College has a very large homosexual student population?

Pardon me? Where exactly did you "hear" this?

Here is a better question for your weary late night mind to ponder: Why exactly did you feel that it was important to mention the possible sexual preference of students in a thread inquiring about a college? I gotta tell ya...when someone asks me about a school, I sure as hell don't think..."Who are the students sleeping with?"

50. Nope. It's a state school.
At one time it was simply an autonomous (It was only upper classmen) part of the University of South Florida/Tampa but not it's independant....I think. Needless to say it's a school that's very highly ranked.

I suppose one could get all "new agey" there but generally speaking it's for highly independant exceptional students who will go on to graduate degrees elsewhere.

46. I wrote a couple of stories...
...for my little newspaper that dealt indirectly with New College.
A young man from Minnesota and another from New College drowned in Puerto Rico last June while on an extended stay to study at the world's largest telescope (forget the name).
Everything I heard was that the unfortunate young men were highly intelligent, full of compassion for social justice and hungry for knowledge.
I am no expert, but it sounds like a terrific place, connected to many many other outside opportunities for independent study.

53. New College is the "gifted" college in the FL state system
We are looking at it for our son, a junior in HS. New College is affiliated with the University of South Florida in Tampa.

From what I've heard/researched, it is an excellent school but the students have to be very self-motivated and focused to succeed. Only the top students, those considered to be academically gifted, are accepted. I'd assume, therefore, that academically it's very competitive, challenging and creative.

Our son isn't crazy about it because it doesn't have any sports and he wants to run in college.

As far as the Sarasota area is concerned, it's got beaches close by, it's near Tampa/Ybor City for nightlife, etc. Most college students don't get too involved in the politics of the city in which they are attending school.

If New College is a good fit for your nephew, he should go for it!
