1963 was an interesting year for coups |

It's amazing the coincidences you come across in a short period of time - these all struck me on the same day...a little light research, watching The Fog of War. Some things just make you go "hmmmmm"...
First there was Kassim in Iraq - overthrown and killed in a coup staged on 9 February 1963, by the military and the Baath Socialist Party.
Then there was Diem in Vietnam - U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge refused to meet with Diem and began to encourage ARVN Generals led by General Duong Van Minh that overthrew the government, who ordered Captain Nhung to execute President Diem, his younger brother Ngo Dinh Nhu, on November 1, 1963.
With its party ranks weakened, the Baath was overthrown by Arif and a coterie of military officers in a bloodless coup, who became provisional president and was confirmed on November 20, 1963.
Finally, on November 22 Kennedy was assassinated.
