Sludge: NYT Plans FRONT PAGE Splash On Rove

NY TIMES FIGHTS BACK: PLANS FRONT SPLASH ON ROVE; REPORTER SITS IN JAIL

Top editors of the NY TIMES made the decision Monday afternoon to turn up the heat on White House adviser Karl Rove.

The TIMES is planning to lead Tuesday editions with growing calls for Rove's resignation, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT, a powerplay in DC all-star game of high stakes finger pointing and intrigue.

While TIMES reporter Judith Miller remains jailed for refusing to testy about sourcing before a grand jury investigating the outing of a CIA "operative," the paper's editors are splashing Rove's own lack of detailed explanation detailing his press contacts.

"Scott McClellan, Bush's spokesman, repeatedly declined to say whether he stood behind his previous assertions that Rove played no role in the matter or whether the president would follow through on his pledge to fire anyone in his administration found to be involved," report the NYT's David Johnston, Adam Liptak and Richard Stevenson in their front page lead.

10. That is an EXCELLENT point, but we've got him in spirit, if not
technically.

Don't worry. There won't be a backlash, here.

3. Hey, don't knock the help!
You may want Judy in jail, and that's where she is. If the NYT is going to put the heat on the WH, why are you complaining?

5. Classic Sludge.
Whenever they know they can't spin it out of existence, they gove it to Marvelous Matt to splash around & pretend he got a scoop, thereby hoping to cling to some shred of a pretense of redeeming journalistic value.

So, yeah. It's coming out. They can't stop it. Matt gets to play reporter.

15. Rove Comes Under New Scrutiny in C.I.A. Disclosure Case
Rove Comes Under New Scrutiny in C.I.A. Disclosure Case

By DAVID STOUT
Published: July 11, 2005

WASHINGTON, July 11 - The White House went on the defensive today amid a barrage of questions from Democrats and reporters about the presidential adviser Karl Rove and whether he had disclosed the name of a covert intelligence operative in retaliation for criticism of the administration's Iraq policy.

President Bush's chief spokesman, Scott McClellan, declined to repeat his earlier assertions that Mr. Rove, the deputy White House chief of staff, had nothing to do with leaking the name of the operative, Valerie Plame of the Central Intelligence Agency, to get back at her husband, a former United States ambassador who had publicly challenged Bush administration policy.

Nor would Mr. McClellan repeat his earlier statements that any White House staff person who had leaked the name should be fired.

Not a SHOCKER, but they sure gave a lot of print to the Dems.

You know, what this actually looks like from Drudge is damage control spin- as if the NYT "has it in" for BushCo, and this is the "worst" of it...when really they're just reporting it straight.

23. Is this the right one?
Not sure that this is the article dredge is referencing. He claims the story will be written by "David Johnston, Adam Liptak and Richard Stevenson ". This article is written by Davis Stout. I believe the NYT posts tomorrows edition at midnight ET

Happy to see this on their front page now but hoping the one tomorrow is a bit meatier. I love the smell of pork fat in the morning.

18.  Judith Miller must have more to hide than just who leaked
the CIA's top secret personnel. We now know Rove is guilty. She has
become part of the cover up.

26. Judith Miller deserves the jail time, but I think she's too scared to blab

My guess is that she knows who the other "senior administration official" is (recall there is another besides Rove) and is worried about any "repercussions". She did mention something about the government being "too powerful" in her statement. Put her (and her family) into Witness protection and we'd probably end up with a much bigger fish to fry -

my two cents
