GEORGE AND TONY GET THEIR AL-QAEDA FIX - Greg Palast
Monday Jul 11, 2005
By Greg Palast

The tooth fairy, Santa Clause, WorldCom profits, the Easter Bunny, al-Qaeda.

The cruel, evil jerks who blew up the London subway last week, despite appropriating al-Qaeda's name for their website and T-shirts, have about as much to do with al-Qaeda as a Beatles tribute band has to do with the Fab Four.

For all the horror, hoopla and hair-pulling, this was no September 11. Timmy McVeigh slaughtered a heck of a lot more people in Oklahoma City with his cow-poop bomb.

1. a refreshing take
That's a refreshing take on what happened, and the article puts the events in a new perspective that makes a lot of sense.

3. Al Qaeda might be less of a threat, but terrorism as a whole
has grown due to the war in Iraq. If, as Palast, insinuates, this latest terrorist blood bath is the work of some young schmucks just acting on their own inspired by some rant by a mullah in London, doesn't that suggest that the Iraq War has created terrorism that wouldn't have existed without the hatred that it provoked?

What do you think is the key ingredient of the mullah's rant? The essential proof of the perfidy of the US and UK? Isn't the centerpiece of all this terrorism the example of Iraq?

5. you're right
Actually, I don't necessarily agree with his assessment. Al-qaeda has expanded to over 70 countries. Likely, this was an al-qaeda affiliated bombing. But are they the caliber of the pros who did Madrid? No, not by a long shot. One thing worth adding, is that the Mullah in question has been actively recruiting young fighters to go to Iraq. Could this cell have learned some of their crude bomb making technique in Iraq? Maybe, of course we don't know that, but it's a thought to throw out there.

4. From another story on his site -snip-
Judith Miller is facing big time in the Big House because of her refusal to name an intelligence source.

Miller, if you remember, was the willing conduit of official disinformation who by-lined the infamous stories in the Times backing Bush Administration hooey about Saddam's alleged Weapons of Mass Destruction. (Oddly, the Administration is not asking her to reveal who in Camp Bush fed her that hot, stinking load of baloney.)
