14. I wrote a short paper on Dice during college
I'll summarize:

Clay saw himself as "doing a character" like Archie Bunker. He intentionally tried to make his character seem ignorant and foolish. He thought people would "get it," and see him not as a folk hero, but as a contemptible buffoon.

But later in his career, he realized this was not the case. People were seeing his character as a mascot and as a spokesperson for their own small-minded beliefs.

This is what he cried about during his interview on The Arsenio Hall Show. He didn't understand how people couldn't understand that he didn't want people to admire his "Diceman" personae.

A key difference between Dice and Archie Bunker is that Archie was always surrounded by foil characters. He always had Meathead around to call attention to Archie's idiocy.

The Diceman, on the other hand, had the stage all to himself and thought that people would be smart enough to "get the joke."

Hell, even smoking a cigarette by holding his arm across his head didn't bring home the point, "Hey, this guy is supposed to be a moron."

As if the half-literate juvenile nursery rhymes and malapropisms like "transtesticles" weren't enough.

Andrew Dice Clay was an idiot when it came to reading his own audience. And American males aged 12-30 were idiots when it came to understanding him.

He gets really choked-up and talks about how much the whole thing has upset him and how it's made his mother miserable.

Andrew Dice Clay
Here's a guy women love to hate and men adore. Inspired by his blue-collar Brooklyn roots, Andy Clay is rude, crude and extremely offensive. He makes fun of relationships and women are often the punchline. Also known for his dirty nursery rhymes, he always begins his shows by smoking cigarettes on stage. Nevertheless, his sexist Diceman persona -- an Italian wiseass despite the fact that he's really Jewish -- shot him to stardom in the '80s and he became a national phenomenon. In 1990, he hit the big screen as the lead role in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

His "jerk" image has been slightly shattered since he broke down and cried on The Arsenio Hall Show, after being accused of misogyny. He was so popular that he once sold out Madison Square Garden two nights in a row, a first for a comedian. He is so raunchy that he was once banned from performing on MTV. Andrew Dice Clay is now mostly out of the spotlight (except for an appearance in 2001's One Night at McCool's), but he still has legions of dedicated fans.

19. Good take
I could never really stomach him enough to even listen to the humour.

But I think you really nailed it.

Good comparison to Archie Bunker, BTW.

Seems to me that FReepers are a little on the slow side, especially when it comes to recognizing satire or irony.

They never really got the joke.
