Our representative in Congress here in suburban Milwaukee, Jim Sensenbrenner, has been in the news a lot lately. Today's paper reports that he wants to make the Patriot Act permanent in almost all respects:
Sensenbrenner's measure would leave the hotly debated law largely intact. It also would repeal the law's "sunset" provisions, under which some of its search and surveillance powers are to expire at the end of this year.
The House Judiciary Committee will debate the Patriot Act's reauthorization beginning Wednesday, and the issue is expected to go to the House floor next week....
In fact, in an April interview, Sensenbrenner said he didn't think there were enough GOP votes on his committee to make the act permanent in its entirety, and he expected some of the powers to continue to be subject to an expiration date.
But the bill introduced Monday contains no such sunsets and is in keeping with recent comments by Sensenbrenner that he believes the Patriot Act is not overbroad and has not been abused. It also reflects the Bush's administration's desire to make the act fully permanent.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/nat/jul05/340343.aspThere is a poll with this article, asking whether the Patriot Act should be made permanent. Currently the results are No 58%, Yes 26%, Some but not all 14%.
