Blasts rock Spain power station
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 13:40 GMT 14:40 UK

The Basque separatist group Eta has been blamed for four explosions
which struck a power station in northern Spain. There were no
casualties. Spanish officials said the blasts, in the town of
Amorebieta, came shortly after warnings in the name of Eta. Workers at
the power plant were evacuated before the explosions. Witnesses were
quoted as saying the blasts were small. Eta has been waging a violent
campaign since 1968 to win Basque independence.

Policeman hurt in Barcelona blast
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 12:26 GMT 13:26 UK

A small blast at the Italian Cultural Institute in the Spanish city of
Barcelona has lightly injured a policeman and killed a sniffer dog. The blast happened as a bomb disposal team was examining a suspicious metal coffee pot which staff had spotted at the building's entrance on
Tuesday. The Italian foreign ministry described it as a home-made bomb.
Nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast and Italy's consul in
the city said no threats had been received. The Associated Press reports that graffiti was daubed on a wall outside the cultural institute reading "freedom for Italian prisoners" along with a circle with the letter A - the symbol for anarchism.

Blast hits Israeli coastal town
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 09:16 GMT 10:16 UK

An explosion at a shopping centre in the Israeli costal town of Netanya has killed at least three people. Israeli police say it was caused by a suicide bomber, and one report says Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad says it was behind the blast. Rescue services say they are treating at least 30 people, some of them with serious injuries. Schools have broken up for the summer in Israel and there are reports of a number of teenagers among the injured. BBC Jerusalem correspondent Lucy Williamson says the explosion in Netanya follows four months of relative calm in Israel. Netanya has been a target in the past, but the last time was in 2001, before Israel began building its barrier around the West Bank. Earlier, in a separate incident, a large explosion was reported near a Jewish settlement in northern West Bank, near the city of Nablus.

The incident was initially believed to be a car bombing. Israel Radio
later reported that a vehicle was transporting gas canisters and may
have exploded by accident. "I can confirm there was an explosion at
Shavei Shomron a short while ago and we are checking the source of it," a military spokesman told AFP.

Beirut bomb targets top minister
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 09:16 GMT

A powerful car bomb has injured the outgoing Lebanese defence minister, and killed at least two other people. Police said Elias Murr was taken to hospital with minor wounds while one of his entourage was seriously injured. Television footage showed two wrecked vehicles and a bloodied casualty in severe shock being helped from a car. Lebanon has seen a string of bombings against anti-Syrian opposition figures since last year. Mr Murr by contrast is a staunch supporter of Syria. The bomb went off as Mr Murr's motorcade passed in the affluent Christian suburb of Antelias. "I saw smoke and fire out on the street and people screaming. It was a very loud explosion," said one 14-year-old eyewitness.

Explosion rocks Trinidad capital
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 02:39 GMT 03:39 UK

Two people remain in critical condition after an explosion in the capital of the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago, officials say. National Security Minister Martin Joseph said a total of 13 people had been injured in central Port of Spain.

Officials say the blast just after 1400 local time (1800 GMT) was caused by an explosive device hidden in a rubbish bin a few blocks from parliament.

But they say it is not clear what kind of device was used, nor who placed it.

The blast occurred on the corner of Frederick and Queen streets - the capital's major crossroads.

5. um, the same thing as usual?
ETA is a terrorist group, they'be been blowing up things in Spain since the 60's. There is a Catalonian seperatist movement that has been blowing stuff up in Barcelona on and off for decades. And since when do bombings in Iraq, Israel or Lebanon strike anyone as unusual?

dangerous world out there, y'know?

Cnn right now. They're not terribly alarmed. Nothing about these bombings, and certainly nothing about them as a grand, horrible total. Numerous acts, not just one, in one day. If this is not a new record, I will be surprised.

11. Well I guess the casualties are
small so that makes it insignificant. And since they seem to be independent acts by different groups, who cares?

Really? I mean the world is a dangerous place and people get bombed everyday so who really gives a fuck??

13. What might get some attention: if the explosives used are all "military
grade" and can be traced to Iraq and all of the stuff we let get away when our backs were turned. I think some of those tons of explosives are turning up around the world. Sure, the world is so much safer.

Iraqi city hit by fresh car bomb
Last Updated: Tuesday, 12 July, 2005, 16:41 GMT 17:41 UK

A car bomb attack in the ethnically mixed northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk has left at least three people dead and several injured.
Police say the attack targeted a US military patrol, but there were no US casualties. The dead were civilians.

Iraqi police colonel Amir Mirza was earlier shot dead in Baghdad, while a US soldier died of injuries from a land mine explosion south of the city.

Violence has increased since Iraq's new government was installed in April.
