Burka Alternatives: You guys won't believe this Freeper Fashion show!
I found this during an unfortunate foray into freep-dom.

http://www.liliesapparel.com/

LILIES OF THE FIELD began in response to the need for women and girls to return to principles of modesty and femininity — to truly dress like women of virtue and principle. For more information on why what we believe affects our dress, click on the link to the left.

Many folks have found it very frustrating to try to find the kind of clothing that would honor the Lord. Lilies of the Field provides attractive, modest, feminine, high-quality clothing for girls and ladies. We design our clothing with high standards of modesty, custom made in your size. We offer a large selection of styles including maternity/nursing wear hard to find elsewhere with a dozen different fabrics to choose from. Fabric styles and patterns include denims, floral prints, mini prints, corduroy, flannels, plaids, checks and poly-cottons.

45. Little House on The Prairie
or the Waltons...extreme retro--like a couple centuries ago.

Women look silly in little girl dresses. They also look silly in the more extreme of today's peek-a-boo fashions. It's a time of extremes, of polarities.

Oh well, at least we'll be able to tell who are the hardcore "Econo-wives" at a glance. "The Handmade's Tale" come true...

Each time I have received a package from you, I was so grateful and delighted. It is a blessing to receive such beautiful well-crafted clothing. Thank you so much. God began convicting us about modest, feminine dress 5-6 years ago. I could not sew and have not yet learned, but thanks to your ministry, we still have been able to obey our Lord’s leading. JW

But given that girls often sleep in Boy boxer's and T-shirts?

Words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, encouraging his followers not to worry about their worldly needs: “Why take ye thought for raiment ? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

when I was a little girl. I'm 61 now!

The one thing I was looking for was the length of the skirts and I couldn't seem to tell. To me that would be the telling sign.

Other than that, the styles are from the 40's & 50's.

I guess there really is some truth in the statements some dems are making..."The Extreme RW of the Pub Party want to stack the SCOTUS and take this country back to the 50's".

I actually miss wearing jumpers and blouses occasionally. I usually wear jeans, or shorts, but if I want to wear non-slacks/pants a jumper would be a good choice for me, instead of a blouse and skirt or a dress. I have "figure issues" with much of women's clothes ... I'm very short waisted with normal length legs. Dresses with fitted waists don't fit properly, and petite pants fit well in the rise/waistline but the legs are too short. Normal length legs fit me fine, but then the rise/waist is too tall and comes up to my bra (almost).

Yeah, the swimsuits aren't real great but I'd rather wear one of those than butt floss and dixie cups on a string.

I'm not all that upset over this sort of thing. Let them dress in the manner they wish, worship in the same manner, etc, etc. They can even recite the Pledge of Allegiance with that McCarthy-era "under God" modification. Doesn't bother me one damned bit. I'll continue using the Pledge I learned in grade school a long time ago --- the King James Version, so to speak.

Just DON'T let them force others to conform to their ways, and DON'T let them use tax-payer $$$$ in the process.

70. Modest doesn't have to be hideous, unless it's for a reason
If I had daughters, I wouldn't want them running around in a lot of what I see kids in. Slutty clothes do not need to come in kid sizes! But why so ugly?

What's being made fun of here is the style. Personally, I think the style is odd for a reason beyond modesty. Christian-marketed modest clothing tends to run toward Little House On The Prairie, but it doesn't HAVE to. For example, look here at some modest, sporty swimsuits:

http://www.wholesomewear.com/page-4.html

These cover up just as much as the horrible flowered bloomer thing, but look like sportswear and not like adult baby costumes made out of a slaughtered tablecloth.

Here's a whole catalog page of modest clothing suppliers:

http://www.modernmuslima.com/clothiers.htm

Poke through there and look at the difference between the Christian, secular, and Muslim links. It's possible to cover up and not have your everything hanging out without looking like an extra from a cheap Western. Notice that on this Muslim page, there are secular and Christian links. Would you expect a Christian-oriented modest clothing list to link to a store that sells "Goth hippie clothes" ? This page does. If the skirt fits, wear it, right?

Wrong, if what you're really trying to do is announce to the world how holy and Christian you are, to set your kids apart from other kids that might not think like you, and to reinforce this Village concept of living in a simpler, sweeter time. Isn't one of the principles of modesty not to draw attention to yourself? Wouldn't looking like you just wandered away from a casting call for Oklahoma! draw a bit of attention?

The clothes being made fun of here are being made fun of because they're funny little costumes for Christians who want to full-time-LARP, not because they're modest. Yes, there is an element of mocking people's beliefs. These folks apparently think that a Jew who lived two thousand years ago in the Middle East wants them to dress up their wives and children like pioneers on a wagon train in the American West. What's not to mock? It's silly.

81. Hmmm, about the nursing bras and slips
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 03:04 PM by Citizen Jane
It strikes me that no self-respecting Freeper would let their woman breastfeed in public if at all. Assuming that a Freeper gal is allowed to BF, don't you think she would be relegated to the back room? Is she buying a nursing bra/slip to hide herself from God?

Truthfully, if you are going to nurse alone there are easier ways to do it than dealing with a nursing bra and I DO speak from experience. Just interesting. See what I am saying? Why make nursing "lingerie" for women who are going to nurse in private and can, presumably, expose themselves (the horros) to do so without having to deal with the hooks and snaps of those torturous nursing bras (yes, some are comfortable, but these don't sound like that!).

Adult women wearing infantile clothing is a strange dynamic. Does Rick really wish his wife was a little girl? She doesn't have to show off her midriff...or show cleavage....or wear a short skirt. But, geesh, she's an adult. The Holly Hobbie dress is dreadful.

Try Lilies of the Field Custom Made clothing for women whose husbands cannot deal with the fact that their spouse is a sexual being. Our dresses reach to the floor, have baggy fronts that will cover up the biggest dirty pillows, and our gaudy, dated prints will make a true fashion statement: "Baptist Camp Prayer Revival"

Coming soon from Lilies of the Field: whalebone corsets, chastity belts, and a special new cloth called Thora-zon. This new cloth contains the powerful drug Thorazin, and is sure to make your wifey a good little girl who will more than gladly wait on you hand and foot. And it is almost impossible to get wrinkles out of it. Wifey will be ironing all day!

Lilies of the Field...setting women's fashion back 100 years or more. Or your money back! Praise Jesus.

98. Shirtwaists?!
A-lines? Jumpers? Chapel veils... they still have those? My mother used to make me wear things like that... she had better taste in fabrics however, and she would have thought the bonnet was tacky. I made a solemn vow to myself to never wear those things again. Now that I think of it... this clothing could have come out of my sister-in-law's closet.

Someone mentioned furniture upholstered in one of those fabric patterns... I had curtains that looked like one of the skirts... hey, I was a poor student and I found them junking.

I will admit to owning bloomers... I got them for a show. I now occasionally use them to sleep in when hubby is out of town. Bloomers aren't all that bad looking... ever see Julie Newmar in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"? I wanted bloomers ever since I saw that song and dance number. I wouldn't want to wear them horseback riding however.

The swimsuits... and here I thought nothing could ever be uglier than the old blue gymsuits that we were required to wear for gym classes.

I should also mention that I'm not ragging on this because it's Christian... The attempt to proselytize on the site was to be expected. While my above mentioned sister-in-law is a fundie Christian who dresses and thinks like these folks, the site could have been just as easily aimed at Orthodox Jewish women, who from what I understand have a similar attitude towards modesty. I'm poking fun at it because everything was pretty damned ugly and most looked like rejects from June Cleaver's closet. Taste has nothing to do with religion.

I actually don't have a problem with the "modesty" thing. A little more modesty in clothing is not necessarily a bad idea. I don't care how an adult dresses. However, I don't really need to see someone's butt crack or that their pants are so low slung in the front I can tell that they probably opted for the the Brazilian wax at the spa. I don't think it's particularly attractive, but that's me. Personally, I'll be happy when I can find good old fashioned jeans again... ones that don't feel like they're falling off my hips when I walk.

On the other hand, I'm heartily sick of seeing the "pre-teen slut" look. Little girls should look like little girls... and I don't mean the pinafores and pig-tails in this catalogue when I say that. I just don't want to see them looking like 9 year old sluts. I've been fighting that battle for several years now and the thought of it makes me very cranky.

Stylistically speaking, while I don't think that looking like an extra for Anne of Green Gables is particularly a good look for me (frumpy wouldn't begin to describe it), my best friend does have a few dresses that would fit in with those in the catalogue and they look great on her... she was even told that they weren't conservative enough for her job (executive administrator of a charitable organization for people with cancer and their families). And, it wasn't that they expected the power suit either, the board thought she looked much too "artsy". Oh, I should mention that modesty isn't in her vocabulary... she just likes the dresses and also has better taste in fabrics and colours than these folks do. I guess it's all in how one wears their clothes.

I'll shut up now. Humourous site... maybe I'll send the link to sister-in-law... although my nieces would probably like me better if I don't.

I see people wearing this stuff, around here, sometimes -- as we have a lot of Mennonites and other branches of Anabaptists, or whatever.

I have to say, that as a plain-dressing minarchist, myself, that I actually kind of like some of the dresses -- the dark colored ones, with the stripes and the checker patterns. The fact, however, that people are hawking them to make women dress more "modestly" is fucking disgusting.

120. Considering the outrage that shows up here
any time a thread talking about dress codes or uniform codes for workplaces shows up, and how many people scream and holler that nobody should judge them for what they choose to wear, no matter what it is, the responses on this thread are very, very telling.

These people aren't telling YOU to wear these clothes. They offer them for folks who want to wear them. They aren't saying eveyone has to wear them, only those who choose to. They didn't come to DU and post a thread about their site, saying "you heathens, come and buy our clothing and be modest!"

Have the people making merry here never heard of the Mennonites, or the Amish? There are other religious sects who dress this way as well. It's part of their faith. They don't push it on others. It's their own choice.

Maybe some find these clothes ugly, but there are some who find hip hugger jeans that are so low they show pubic hair ugly. Some people find "babydoll" t-shirts on grown women absurd. Different strokes. I wouldn't wear the clothing on the Lilies website, but I sure as hell wouldn't wear nine-tenths of what's for sale in the stores right now either, no matter how "fashionable" it is supposed to be.

Ridiculing people's religious beliefs is now part of being liberal?

As for the mentions of the "whacko in Texas" who drowned her children in the bathtub - she was wearing a blouse and slacks that day, I believe. And she was a severely mentally ill woman who had not been given adequate medical treatment through a combination of her insurance company's limitation of her care, her doctor's failure to have her properly diagnosed and treated, and her husband's neglect of and ignorance about her condition and the possible ramifications of leaving it untreated. She didn't just have post-partum depression - she'd been mentally ill, seriously mentally ill, for years before having children or getting involved with a fundamentalist sect.

Several times on this thread, I've noticed the term "Quaker" being used as a slam. Quakers are pacifists, folks. Maybe not the snazziest dressers, but they're sure opposed to war and violence. What's more important - fashionable dress style, or being opposed to war?
