Cheney Off The Ticket?
Republicans are in big trouble, and they know it. However, they aren't going to sit still and let Bush lose the election. Cheney, once thought to provide a steadying influence on Bush, is no longer an asset. He's now seen as responsible for major policy gaffes, including manipulating intelligence reports. His departure may create an opening for a fresh face on the GOP ticket. It's unlikely that the ambitious Bill Frist wants the job of VP, but Don Nickles might.

Republicans don't want to see John McCain challenge Bush for the presidency. Although Bush has run out of excuses and weakened the party, it's unlikely that they'll admit a screw-up by replacing him. Democrats are gaining in strength, while the Republicans are stuck trying to defend Bush's record. Look for a break in the ranks.

Don Nickles for VP?

Bush has a chance to do something historic.

3. I don't know about that John
The government has always used fear to scare the people. And since the public is generally shit, it has always worked.

one good point for supporting Kucinich though, our generation has grown up with 3-4 wars if we promote peace as we should with Kucinich, generations wont have to suffer from war, ours has although they havent sent us yet, its sad though.

26. Not...gonna...do it!
Colin Powell is not the republican party's idea of doing something historic. The repubs will NEVER put a Black man a heartbeat away from the presidency, I don't care how well-liked that man is by the public. And moreover, even when the public says they like Powell, most whites will still punch the hole for the white man in the end. Anyone here recall when Tom Bradley, former Mayor of L.A., ran for Guv of California, circa 1982, I think? He was leading in the polls on election day, but whoops! the dullard repub George Deukmajian won! Whites just couldn't bring themselves to state openly in polls that they wouldn't have a Balck man in the Governor's office.

on the Supreme Court. Once they felt they found the right kind of black man.

And they will lose overwhelmingly. Then we'll hear Rush Bimbaugh cry and moan that the democrats are hypocrits because they wouldn't vote for Condi.

8. Well, Nickles IS retiring from the Senate.....
...but I don't know if he's the "name" the 'Pukes would need to take Uncle Dick's place. If I were Rove (and could avoid the urge to kill myself) I would be trying to capitalize on the attempts to capture a "minority" voting block. Which is why Condi or Colon would be a likely choice.

12. You underestimate their need to stay in power.
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 12:41 AM by Solomon
They can't afford any investigations. They don't have to worry about her becominng president if something happens to Bush. She wouldn't have any power anyway and if desperate they could bump her off.

You gotta admit. Bush thought he was creating a real history legacy with this Iraq thing, but it has failed. He could insure a big deal historically, if he put a minority in the VP position.

13. Hang onto the Bush-Cheney bumper sticker.
It could become a collector's item (just kidding).

My only take on this is: count on anything from these guys. After keeping an eye on these pit vipers for a couple of years now, I've been able to pick up on a few of their tactics.

They are, without a doubt, flamboyant and unpredictable. They are also, to a great extent, creative. Also sinister, misguided, every evil adjective I can find in the Webster's Dictionary.

As far as dumping Cheney, it wouldn't surprise me knowing these guys. They have absolutely no loyalty to each other. Only the usefulness that each one provides.

So if they feel that Cheney is a liability, they will dump him. However, we all know that Cheney would rather die than give up his position as emissary of Halliburton Oil.

So, they may need to take ole Dick on a joy ride like they did in the movie, Used Cars. Oh, that's right -- Dick has a bad heart, doesn't he?

15. Tommy Thompson?
Bush got a couple of big-state governors to join his cabinet. Everybody was surprised to see them last as long as they have. Christy Whitman found out that Bush is just as much of a pig as she thought he was.

Maybe Bush will go for impeachment insurance and select somebody even more dreadful than himself. Marc Racicot?

Marc Racicot, VP?

looks like she's on the short list. Condi also gives the GOP the opportunity to try to shamelessly cut into the Black vote.

17. Condi's On Her Way Out Too
Condoleezza Rice's tenure as National Security Adviser has been as dismal as Cheney's tenure as Vice President. I'm assuming that the same Republican insiders who want Cheney out want her out as well. Condoleezza Rice missed the September 11th attack, claiming that nobody could have connected the dots. This story, flimsy at the time, has gotten flimsier with each passing month.

Can anyone think of a judgement that Condoleezza has made that's been right? Bush makes her face the cameras to tell official whoppers - it makes her valuable, but hardly merits a promotion. As I see it, the Bush administration will have new faces even before the election. Condi will be making speeches to Las Vegas conventioneers; she won't be advising Bush on foreign policy.

19. Cheney has definitely been positioned as a fall guy
I don't think for one second that he simply used the wrong talking points on Meet The Press. Nor do I believe that he thought he could lie about his financial ties to Halliburton and not get caught. I think Cheney has suddenly started "misbehaving" so that Bush will HAVE TO force him out.

Resigning for family or health reasons wouldn't solve anything, and for the very reason that you suggest: Cheney is being designated as the poster boy for everything that's wrong at the Bush White House, and a public display of eliminating him is supposed to make the Pretzel-Dunce look decisive and more electable. It's all an act, of course. Cheney may have to leave Washington DC, but he'll never be more than a phone call away. And as I'm sure Karl Rove could tell him, you can accomplish a lot more when you're the power behind the throne.

20. In the Washington post today:
The results of a congressional investigation show Cheney still has significant ties to halliburton.

Cheney is a major liability now. Expect him to have heart trouble and resign.

It would be good cover for them in that they could claim w/ Giuliani on the ticket NY would be in play. I know, I know, people will say he's not ideological compatible because of his pro-choice stands etc., but since when have the Repubs cared about that? I mean they're backing Arnold...

He loves the power too much. They's have to drag him out kicking and clawing. I don't think he's going anywhere.
