Will the Brits get their own patriot act?
Will there be a mad dash to write legislation to combat terrorism? Will there be people locked up with no lawyer, no judge and no contact with the outside world? Will libraries be subjected to handing over who checked out what books? Will the government be allowed to listen in on private conversations whenever the mood strikes? Will someone be labeled enemy combatant so they won't be subject to rules of war? Will the government be able to go after who they want, when they want, where they want just because they think you might possibly not like them?

We had one terrorist attack in Oklahoma City. No patriot act. We get another, much worse, one in New York City and Washington D.C. Then we've got a patriot act.

The Brits have a history of terrorists attacks. Will they get one now?

2. We already have
Very strict anti-terror laws thanks to the IRA.

We also have the vile RIP (Regulation of Investigatory Powers) Act that can force Internet service providers, phone companies and postal service operators to provide highly detailed information on those who use their services.

It also has a clause that forces people to hand over encryption keys (hand over the encryption keys and your password else you're obviously guilty of something).

We have plenty of disgusting laws already, we don't need more.

Have a look at Liberty for more information, they're the closest organization to the ACLU that we have in the UK.

3. There's been some effort on the part of the Blair government...
... to get "enhancements" passed to their security act--the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act (the ATCSA, which was passed not long after 9/11)--but, they've been meeting some resistance. Not sure if that's changed, or will change soon because of the bombings in London. The changes, I believe, are related to limitations on habeas corpus similar to those in effect here.

4. Go down to the UK forum
and take a look at the numerous threads about ID cards.

But then again we were going to get them anyway.
