5. This is probably the same tired BS about him mentioning the name
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 08:23 AM by ET Awful
during open hearings of an agent who had already been recognized as such months before. I believe the hearings until that point had called him Agent Smith or somesuch nonsense and Kerry used his real name (which, as I said, was already known and published months before the hearing).

It should be noted that Richard Lugar mentioned the same agent using his real name at the same hearings and nobody has complained of that.

"Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., both mentioned a name, Fulton Armstrong, that had not previously come up in public accounts of the intelligence flap."

7. It's incorrect and goes back to the Rice hearings.
The agent had been outed already and a republican mentioned the person's name before Kerry did. Sorry, I can't remember all the little details.

10. Kerry repeated a GOP source statement - statements that began in
1998, and which everyone except GOP talking heads says outed no one because they were public record and indeed in the Congressional Record years before Kerry recalled them.

The fellow recalled by Kerry had been resigned/fired and was investigated and was not a covert Agent.

Jesus - these folks lie like it is easier to lie than tell the truth.

The GOP has a real talent for telling lies.

11. Ignore it.
Anytime you see this type of nonsense, recognize it as a feeble republican attempt to distract attention from the White House's severe and growing troubles.

Kerry Outs CIA Operative!
Michael Demmons
Well, the person was not really an operative, and his bio is online if you want to find it. But my point is this - the headline I just wrote. Kerry Outs CIA Operative!!

I've noticed today that this sentence, or one similar, headlines not a few blog postings in the right-leaning blogosphere in reference to a story in the Washington Post:

"We referred to this other analyst at the CIA, whom I'll try and call Mr. Smith here," Bolton said at one point.

But the committee chairman, Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), and Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) mentioned a name that had not previously come up in public accounts of the intelligence flap.

Oddly, when people on the conservative side talk about who "outed" this guy, there's no mention of the Republican senator, Richard Lugar. Why, I wonder, would anyone want to say it was just John Kerry, when all of the stories (at least the several I've read) have clearly stated it was both senators?

And an old NYTimes Article:

Loose Lips Let Slip Agent's Name At Hearing
New York Times, Late Edition - Final, Sec. A, p 8 04-13-2005
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

WASHINGTON, April 12

(SNIP)

"We referred to this other analyst at the C.I.A., whom I'll try and call Mr. Smith here," Mr. Bolton said. "I hope I can keep that straight."

Mr. Bolton could. But two senators -- Richard G. Lugar, the Indiana Republican and committee chairman, and John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat -- apparently could not. Both identified the analyst, Fulton T. Armstrong, in the hearing.

Though Mr. Armstrong had been identified in news reports two years ago about his dispute with other officials over intelligence involving Cuba, that was when he was the national intelligence officer for Latin America, and his name was no secret. When the Bolton nomination resurrected the old accounts, however, the C.I.A. asked news organizations to withhold his name.

On Monday, Mr. Lugar announced that aides on the Foreign Relations committee had interviewed Mr. Armstrong. Later, Mr. Kerry mentioned him by name while questioning Mr. Bolton. The hearings were televised, and transcripts were widely published. On Tuesday morning, The Associated Press mentioned the disclosure and identified Mr. Armstrong.
