To say that some members of Congress were leaked information about possible BRAC closings may be too strong a word, and bit premature, since this issue is still being worked out in the Pentagon.

Cunningham Issues Statement Regarding BRAC 2005WASHINGTON– Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-San Diego) was unable to attend this afternoon’s meeting with Mayor Murphy due to a long-standing commitment he has had to speak to the cadets at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. He issued the following statement today:
“The analysis released today confirms what we in San Diego have known all along: that our major training bases are irreplaceable military assets. The base closure law specifically states that preservation of these critical air, land and sea ranges shall be a priority throughout the base closure process. San Diego’s value lies in the synergy created by these bases, the military industrial organizations that support them and the rich technology base here in the region. This unique network of competitive military assets makes San Diego better suited than any region in the nation to support the Department of Defense transformation of our military forces into the 21st Century.”
“Despite my opposition to another round of closures, that process is now law and we must prepare to ensure preservation of these unique military resources here in San Diego. It is up to the leaders of this community to ensure that the services not only appreciate the value of the unique synergies created in our region, but that they recognize its capacity to absorb related missions now performed at other bases.”
