Insane anti-gay LTTE in local paper
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 04:22 PM by LostinVA
btw, Charlottesville is REALLY progressive, although the publishers of this fish wrapper are RW spazzes (who also own the Richmond Time-Dispatch).

Gays deserve same, not more, rights

July 10, 2005

In response to the letter “Gays deserve the same rights as others” (The Daily Progress, June 12), I would like to point out that, like everyone, homosexuals can marry someone of the opposite sex and raise children with the same legal protections as all other adults. Homosexuals can also live together and/or raise children without legal repercussions. By asking for “gay marriage,” homosexuals seek the right to redefine marriage according to their specific sexual preferences.

Since someone with exclusive same-sex attraction would not reproduce, it seems unlikely that a homosexual gene would have bred down through generations.

However, even if there is a “gay gene,” we start down a whole new path if we decide that behaviors with a genetic cause should therefore be legally sanctioned. What are we going to do if/when scientists decide that people who prefer polygamy, incest or bestiality are just following their genetic map? If the purpose of marriage is to somehow endorse all behavior by mutually consenting parties, then there is no limit to the forms that marriage may take.

(My fav part if the is the homo gene passing down through generations. This chick has nooooo idea about genetics. Also, Greene county is very red -- both voting and neck color)

1. Ahhhh, the slippery slope argument
If you let straight people marry, next thing you know, the gays will be wanting it, too.

(I'm betting they didn't want you to start that far up the hill, though.)

7. Isn't it funny how the "slippery slope argument" always applies to
"liberal ideas" but never seems to stick to the latest brand of Fascism that the GOP snuggles up with?

3. I know, it's like "The Onion," it's so crazy
I never read this rag, but my boss showed me the letter.... then, after I became enraged, she was like, "I thought you had seen it. Oh sh*t."

4. FFS
The right is to marry *the person you love*. Not to marry some joe or jane schmoe off the street.

8. Same old tired arguments
Gays have the same rights as heteros--to marry someone of the opposite sex (duh, they don't want to marry someone of the opposite sex you imbecile!).

If we allow gays to marry one another people will want to marry multiple people, toddlers, dogs, trees, toasters and space aliens (typical asinine slippery-slope argument).

Gay people can't reproduce by having sex with one another so they shouldn't have the right to marry (duh, infertile people and postmenopausal women can't reproduce--do we prohibit them from marrying? And haven't you heard of sperm banks, surrogate mothers and adoption?).

Don't these people even think before they write these stupid letters?

:dunce:

9. Question from me
How you deal with the response of when someone asks about why allow gay marriage and what's to stop pologomy, marrying your sibling, etc. and when to draw the line? I get that one a lot.

10. The only reason people have against gay marriage is religious bigotry
Any of the other alleged reasons they come up with are easily refuted as invalid.

When it comes to polygamy/polygyny there would be too many complications. Financial responsibilities, legalities, etc. What is each spouse responsible for? Who raises the children? If wife #1 bears a child does that mean wife #2 takes no part in that child's upbringing and vice-versa (from a legal standing)? If a woman has two husbands and they end up hating each other then what?

Sibling marriage is the easy one. This is a matter of health concerns--siblings and even close cousins simply cannot marry because if they reproduce with one another they have a much higher risk of having offspring with birth defects or other inheritable disorders. That is why the laws (and customs)against this were put in place to begin with--not because of an innate "ick" factor.

11. Although personally re: polygamy/polygyny
I wouldn't care if it came about. And for the Bible beaters, they can can their arguments against polygamy because it's Biblically approved. Just look up Jacob, Rachel and Leah. They can whine about "redefining traditional marriage" all they want when it comes to gays wanting to marry. They were the ones who "redefined traditional marriage" when they banned polygamy!
