Laura Bush poses under HUGE HIV/AIDS red ribbon today in Africa
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 10:03 PM by Bluebear
This is so odd, I don't recall her or her husband being big advocates for people with AIDS or HIV in the United States?

1. It's their new push to get African-Americans to switch parties. Calculated
to the nth degree.

I expect their new product, a Black friendly Bush and GOP, will start to be sold in earnest by the fall. Because you never roll out new product till the fall.....Rove sez so.

2. I thought that you only got AIDS if you
were one of those terrible homosexuals or drug users or adulterers, or maybe if you lived in Boston and the liberal culture made you get it....:sarcasm:

3. Maybe that's why they don't care about the American sufferers

4. But they can't use condoms
Nope.

Not good.

Might be like birth control or something.

No condoms for the Africans

5. That's true, but what does it have to do with African AIDS victims?
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 10:46 PM by Psephos
The Booosh African AIDS initiative is one of the few things the administration has done decently. Bono thinks so, too. I think we should get behind it - better yet, get Congressional Dems to fix the flaws in the program, and make it better. Won't hurt to have more Dem involvement here.

Something like one in three adults in South Africa has the HIV virus. Do you understand what this means? They're going to close that country down when there are no more people. Condoms are not the answer; if I hear one more culturally illiterate person say that I'm going to start bitch slapping.

EDIT: fixed typo

7. I fully support African AIDS relief
I also, however, keep in mind the 1 million living with HIV in the US. Anytime he mentions the disease as it pertains to Americans it is in tandem with some "faith-based" organization he wants to push.

8. I agree with you completely. But these are two separate issues.
Mixing issues happens often on this board, and it drives me crazy. It usually takes the form of pointing out something bad to cancel out when something even marginally good happens. Is anyone else getting tired of being a nihilist?

There is no issue to which this pseudo-discussion technique can't be applied.

Americans with HIV are a separate issue from what's happening in Africa. An important issue, one worth a full discussion. Its OWN discussion.

Meanwhile, although the American response to the African AIDS crisis is far from perfect, it IS something good...especially compared to what the rest of the world is doing. Which is basically nothing.

Peace.

9. I understand your points.
I want both problems served. I am just have the sneaking suspicion that next time the US HIV community asks for funding, some RWer will trot this picture out and say SEE? SEE?

But you are right, Africa needs help and bad. May we all not forget them. Regards to A2 and peace.

11. Probably a new fatih-based initiative.
Give them ribbons, and tell them to pray for the AIDS to go away.
