Up to 70 percent of all agricultural workers, including nursery workers, are undocumented, agriculture officials say. Though it's illegal, growers hire them because they'll work for less money, and employers avoid paying other benefits.

Nurseries began to replace vegetable farms in southern Palm Beach County about 15 years ago, according to Greg Schell of the Migrant Farmworker Justice Project. Though the majority of incoming undocumented workers continue to be single men, many of them find seasonal jobs picking row crops in Belle Glade or Pahokee. The nurseries draw their workforce from older workers, Schell said.

"The fact is, there are not American domestic workers willing to do most of those jobs, and if we're going to continue to have a thriving industry, we're going to continue to need immigrant workers," McElroy said.

"This is the hypocrisy of immigration in America," Schell said. "We all like to have our lawns cut, have pretty plants put in our houses and eat fresh vegetables without paying an arm and a leg."
