Dad Boxed With 3-Year-Old, Mom Says In Murder Trial

TAMPA - Even though the boy would shake and wet himself, his father, Ronnie Paris Jr., would box with the 3-year-old, slapping him in the head until he cried because he didn't want his son to grow up to be ``a sissy,'' the boy's mother testified Monday.

Others corroborated Nysheerah Paris' testimony as the prosecution built its case during the first day of the capital murder trial of Ronnie Paris Jr., 21, accused of abusing 3-year- old Ronnie Paris until the boy slipped into a coma Jan. 22.

He died six days later with swelling on both sides of his brain.

``He was trying to teach him how to fight,'' said Shanita Powell, Nysheerah Paris' sister. ``He was concerned that the child might be gay.''

Even Sheldon Bostic, who was Ronnie Paris Jr.'s Bible- study friend, said he warned the father several times not to play so rough with his son.

``He really did what other fathers do - slap box,'' Bostic said. ``He always said he didn't want his son growing up to be pushed around.''

``Did Ronnie use a term for that?'' asked Jalal Harb, an assistant state attorney.

``He didn't want him to be a sissy,'' Bostic said.

But it certainly shows what happens when homophobia grips someone's mind that they're so scared, so ignorant, so vindictive, that smacking a 3-year-old to death seems like a reasonable course.

I'd really like to see Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Fred Phelps and the rest of the gay-hating crew have to sit through this trial so they see the results of the hatred they so blithely preach. As I say, this is an extreme example, but the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual battery goes on in hundreds and thousands of ways all over the country, teaching good, decent people to hate themselves for no other reason than to promote bigotry and ignorance, and line the overstuffed pockets of our own latter-day pharisees and saducees.

I read this story this morning and was sickened by it.
That:
- Dept of Children and Families returned the child to this home is abhorrent.
- A mother could stand and witness this abuse by the father is appalling.
- Sheldon the bible toter didn't act like a man and deck the father for smacking the little boy around makes him an accomplice in my view.

And also without fault, the police who failed to investigate numerous previous incidents where the child was sent to the hospital.

Also in abundance are all news stories about homosexuals battles for civil rights and the right to marry. On each ot these threads you can read some of the most hate-filled, venemous verbal attacks on homosexuals outside of a Saudi Arabian law against gays.

the other night who had written a book about how religion is being used in the courts? I only caught a snippet. Her gist was that state legislatures are passing laws which effectively give a "get out of jail free" card for people who break existing laws but have religious reasons for their beliefs...and consequent law-breaking. She cites numerous cases in her book which illustrate her point that religion is seeping into our legal system. And not in a good way. She includes cases of child abuse, spousal abuse, and sexual abuse which can be shielded under religious protections.
Yes, that's happening here. Not just in the Middle East.

Just sentence him to life without parole, put him in General Population, and the other prisoners will kill him.

I don't really like the death penalty in this case. All they do in Florida is give you a shot. But in the General Population Death Sentence, prisoners don't have access to those drugs nor do they need them; he'll either be beaten to death, raped to death or stabbed. Any of them are good.
