SF Supervisors Reject WWII Battleship
San Francisco city leaders don't want the USS Iowa in the city.

The Board of Supervisors voted 8-3 on Tuesday against a plan to berth the World War II era battleship on the city's historic waterfront and turn it into a museum and tourist attraction.

In turning away the Iowa, supervisors cited opposition to the war in Iraq, the treatment of gay and lesbians in the service and the city's reputation for embracing the peace movement.

Good on them! Why does a battleship need to be a "tourist attraction" anyway? And wasn't the Iowa the ship that had that explosion that the Navy falsely claimed was caused by a gay sailor?

1. San Francisco is strange
My cousin was on the Iowa when it had the explosion. Not that it matters to the story. But I find it interesting.

3. Plus it would cost a fortune to maintain.

No, the guy was married and his wife and friends swore that he was not. The Navy actually smeared him if memory serves.

4. I'm with you, who wants a memorial to death and destruction?
It would bring down the mood of the whole waterfront!
