Liberals vs. Christians?

Have you noticed that the righties have lately been treating the word "liberal" as if being a liberal excludes one from also being a Christian?

They'll say things like: "The difference between liberals and Christians is..." or "Liberals just don't understand why Christians..."

It's sneaky, but a totally false distinction. Based on the demographics of the U.S., it has to be trut that most liberals in this country ARE Christians.

But they do the same thing with "normal American" or "American values." There's a long history of stigmatizing liberals and leftists as somehow foriegn to the American Experience.

8. "Liberal" now is taken to mean 'anti-Christian' by many evangelical

leaders.. It's seems to be deliberate. Consider this recent quote from Bob Jones, Sr (founder of the university which bears his name). He sent a message of congratulations to GWB at his inauguration early this year stating, in part:

"Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you."

Now I know I was completely wrong. YES WE hate Christ because we follow his rhetoric on aiding the least of our brothers and sisters.

I did not know that Christ advocated genocide of homosexuals and anyone who does not toe the evangelical/fundamentalist line. I did not know that Jesus wanted higher tax cuts for the rich at the expense of social programs that benefit us all.
