I'm only HALF kidding...

http://www.diversityalliance.org/docs/article_secede_000308.html
"Charles Truxillo, a professor of Chicano studies at the University of New Mexico, suggests "Republica del Norte" would be a good name for a new, sovereign Hispanic nation he foresees straddling the current border between the United States and Mexico.

Truxillo predicts the creation of a Republic of the North, calling its birth within the next 80 years "an inevitability." He says the country would include all of the present U.S. states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, plus southern Colorado.

..... Its capital would probably be Los Angeles. "

http://www.secession.net/
"Millions of activists worldwide are committed to national, ethnic, religious and regional secessionist movements described variously as: self-determination, independence, autonomy, sub-national, micro-national, separatist, sovereignty, indigenous, homeland, Fourth World. Ideological movements explicitly or implicitly promoting individual, community or regional rights to secession include: libertarian, anarchist, anti-authoritarian, decentralist, devolutionist, cantonal, green, bioregional, "small is beautiful," communal, survivalist, radical pacifist or futurist. While these latter movements may promote differing social and economic goals, their commitment to individual liberty is strong."

We could work on the states that already more liberal (thinking California, New Mexico and the NW) maybe even encourage a bunch of people to move there and work on seceding from the U.S. Many states and regions have tried to do this before.

The "Upper Penninsula" of Michigan tried to secede from the rest of Michigan. The South (or just S Carolina) seceded from the North during the Civil War, Chicago tried to secede from Illinos. I think New Mexico tried to do this.

We could THEN put the RIGHTFUL President in as our leader: Al Gore.

1. My (libertarian) brother...
once suggested that California become it's own country for liberals.

Of course the Republicans who like living in California wouldn't like it.

2. Sounds good to me, and I'm only
half-joking! Especially if the Bushistas pull another coup next year. Skinner could be VP, WillPitt could be Secretary of State, Nothingshocksmeanymore could be Secretary of Labor, GOPisEvil could be Secretary of Defense, BevHarris could be Secretary of the Treasury. Anyone else with ideas on who could fill what position?

4. Can you imagine if liberals and conservative split...
..and each were denied the contributions to society the others had made, how poor a society the conservative one would be?

16. Now *that* merits discussion, I think.
Given a level starting point, which country would thrive, freeperland or the Democratic Union?

14. Isn't this fun... I'm going to start living in a "pretend" world w/no Bush
Gore's really the President. That 2000 election.... Just a bad dream. Those Bush's and Reagan - that never REALLY happened.

19. Solution proposed awhile ago by a professor at Boston college
SNIP...."A map of the state-by-state voting in 2000 suggests the obvious answer. With the anomalous and proud exception of New Mexico, Gore states are contiguous either to Canada or to other Gore states. In the most peaceful and democratic way, without invoking images of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, these states need to secede from the Union, reform into provinces and join Canada.

As soon as one considers the idea, the advantages become obvious. Citizens of the new Canadian provinces would enjoy basic entitlements and benefits unheard of in the U.S., including: universal health care; good and affordable colleges and universities; good mass transit in major cities; lower rates of violent crime and pollution; affordable prescription drugs; and enhanced respect for the civil rights of all people, including gays and lesbians.

And this is just the beginning. Imagine the efficiencies of scale that will result from combining several states, with their redundant and quarrelsome governments, into single provinces. Through a process of state-by-state referendums, California, Oregon and Washington could reform into Naturia; New England (minus the odious New Hampshire) could reform into Nontario; Wisconsin, Minnesota,

Iowa, Michigan, and Illinois could become Coolcentria; while the eastern states between New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., could become Atlantica."
