Why are the decent Republicans silent? |
|
They are there by the millions. Fiscal conservatives that genuinely believe taxation is wrong. Religious people, that deep down are good people. American military people that want the best for the military. Why aren't they outraged by the Bush regime? Why do they defend someone spending money like a drunk sailor, literally destoying the military infrastucture,in a war that he started?

They have been able to define us as tax raising, licentious, christian hating degenerates. I find it helps though when you point out at least 52% of our tax goes to defense, but i am having a harder time with property taxes.

8. Have you ever bought a new car? |
|
You search and search and read articles and look on the internet to find the very best vehicle out there. Then you plunk down a whole lot of money for it and drive it off the lot. A few months later, you start to notice things - bad things. It sputters. The paint is chipping. The sunroof doesn't work right. There's a shudder at 55. But you keep smiling and waving because you don't want anyone else to know you made a bad choice.
That's what I think it is. Pride. Unwillingness to admit you made a mistake, and fear of having to endure lots of "I told you so"s.

I had a Republican as much as admit this to me the other day at work. I asked him what he thought about the whole Rove leak, and he replied, "If Rove leaked the name he ought to go to jail. If the President knew about it, he should be impeached." I asked him why more Republicans aren't outraged and he said, "Pride. They don't want to accept that they were wrong."

11. Why are they silent about the killing of innocent people in Iraq? |
|
We mourn the London victims, but that many people die on a daily basis in Iraq. The innocent Iraqis deserve vigils, too, but I'm sure they'd prefer to have their country back. A Republican senator - forget which one - was speaking on the floor of the Senate about Haiti a little while ago. He thinks we need to send our military back there if, for no other reason, to protect the innocent civilians. #1 - What military? #2 - Did you hear about the 27 little Iraqi kids blown to smithereens the other day?

18. They thought Bush was the lesser of two evils |
|
The RW media & the Republicans so successfully demonized John Kerry as a flip-flopping weak-on-defense milquetoast last year that many Republicans held their noses & voted Bush.
Like it or not, despite the fiscal conservatism & great economy of the Clinton years , the RW meme of "tax & spend" liberals has sunk into the public consciousness after 30 years of pounding it in... so, people figure if the deficits are out of control with Bush, they'd be worse with Democrats, and hey at least Bush is keeping us safe from terra...

Think about it. We are at "war" and they "support" it, but won't fight in it. They know what Rove did was wrong, but they are chicken shits and refuse to stand up for anything. Anything. That also includes our country and freedoms that they "claim" to love.

Much easier to let the tv tell you how to think than to read and find out for yourselves.
It's the same phenonmenon that has ppl believing that there is a 'god' that is all powerful and perfect, yet they lobby him/her/it every day with prayer to make exceptions in his/her/its plan, which would be perfect if made by a perfect being.
Logic is the best antidote to religion.

They just aren't the cretins with the media access. They are the regular people who have dropped ChimpCo's approval rating down to 42%. They are the regular people, working regular jobs, who have finally seen so much crap from ChimpCo that they've turned against him.
However, I don't think there ARE any decent Republicans left in the media or on politics, and those are the only ones you hear from.

One is that there aren't a lot of them left, at least in office. Here in Minnesota, solidly moderate, consensus-minded, old-style Repubs like former gov Arne Carlson and former Senator Dave Durenbeger have thrown up their hands and walked away in disgust from the party of the Freepers. I think that is true of many who used to be Repubs or leaned that way. I've seen more than a few here on DU.
Second is the reason stated by many of the prior posts - they've been scammed, screwed and cheated and don't want to admit to themselves that they bought into the Chimperor's insanity in the first place.

37. Fear of the death of power |
|
Sure, the Neo-cons and the Fundies have taken over the party but at least they still have more power with this branch of the Republicans in control than they would if Democrats were in power. If they turn, the end result will be a loss of all power. At this point, they can't take back control of the party without giving up the reigns wholesale. The level of corruption is so deep that that to disinfect it, they need to effectively kill their party and they aren't willing to do that. The far left and the far right are very different. The far right is willing to screw the GOP over if they don't get what they want - they make sure they will be pandered to by refusing to relent. Yeah, there is some noise in that direction on the left but when it comes right down to it, they've never gone the Fundie route.

38. For the same reason that the "Good Germans" were silent in the 1930's? |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 04:19 PM by Zorra
Silence is consent, and "decent" is a relative term.
Think about this: It would be a very morally bankrupt society that would use the word "decent" to describe a republican.
"Decent" people, even in a very morally and ethically "tolerant" society, would never, ever condone a political leader that deliberately lies their nation into an unnecessary and illegitimate war, resulting in the deaths and maimings of hundreds of thousands of innocent people .
Or am I being absurd by positing that someone who condones state sanctioned mass murder of innocents is a "decent" human being?
Sorry, there are no longer any decent republicans. Any decent human being would be horrified to be associated with such a vile and corrupt organization.
Any truly decent human being would have abandoned the republican party long ago.
I shun republicans. I have absolutely no respect for them anymore whatsoever. They shame my country and everything that is good about it. I view all republicans as possible dangerous killers, and realize that if they support the killing of innocent people in Iraq, then they are very capable of supporting, through their active or silent consent, the unjustifiable murder of me and my family also.
