Poll question: Re: freeper trolls and grammar / spelling errors. |
|
Are freeper trolls really that uneducated or do they misspell and use bad grammar on purpose for some reason? If so, what reason?

I caught myself spelling liar "lier" in a recent post. I guess this disqualifies me from criticizing any spelling errors they may have.

am the same- i guess if folks reject what i have to say because of spelling and grammer errors, what i have to say wouldn't matter anyway.
It always makes me feel 'small' when those who are 'grammer' and 'spelling' impared, or impatient to speak before they lose the thought, are seen as potential 'trolls- or freepers'-
i ain't no troll, and i sure as hell ain't no freeper- but i am wierd.

8. Must be an unpopular opinion here, but.. |
|
I know that most of the freepers who troll here do have bad spelling, grammar, etc. However, it's not just a freeper thing. My brother is very liberal, antiwar, cares for the poor and homeless, and he can't spell worth a dime. Same story for some others in my family, and a very dear friend of mine. One can have educated ideas and perceptions and still have trouble with writing.

11. some people just type fast...including DUers |
|
Freeper or not, some of us type fast and as any writing teacher will tell you, you are always the worst at spotting out your own spelling errors. That's why writers use Editors...
isn't it possible that freepers are idiots because they have idiotic ideas?
I've seen plenty of freepers with good spelling. Good spelling didn't make tax cuts any more effective at spurring the economy..or make those WMDs appear... or get Rove of the hook for threatening our national security...
My computer has great spelling. far better then mine. It's still a big dumb box incapable of independent thought.

20. Many intelligent educated people can't spell. |
|
Being a naturally born good speller, I thought anybody with half a brain could spell. Working as a medical transcriptionist and having extremely educated, intelligent, and well-spoken physicians trying to help me do my job by spelling (and misspelling) words and telling me where to put the commas rid me of my spelling snobbery.
But still, why don't the freepers spellcheck? And is their homeschooled children learning?

34. Yes, I've known otherwise intelligent people who could not spell. |
|
I really should feel blessed that I never had trouble with spelling and grammar. This was an "elitist" post, but damn it, it's hard to take the trolls seriously when they can't spell the simplest words. :( The last one was so illiterate I had trouble deciphering his version of the English language. It was so bad I wondered if he did it on purpose. Every DUer can communicate better than that, so I wondered if it was a double agent troll or something. :)
DanCa, I know of your Parkinson's and heavy medication. Everyone else who has trouble with spelling, I didn't want to call you out. :( If I joined a mathematics forum, I would look illiterate and silly. That is for DAMN SURE! :D When a sense of direction and mathematical skills were passed out, I got someone else's leftovers, I think. Also, I wish I had better people skills.
Note to self: remember your limitations.

Broad, multifaceted, ignorance.
I know there are DU'ers who can't spell due more to a biochemical issue than an educational problem, and we've certainly all had spelling and grammatical errors in our posts, but it seems like most DU'ers who can't spell KNOW they can't spell and make up for it with intelligent (albeit poorly spelled) posts.
Freeper trolls just don't seem to be aware that their spelling is totally sub par, or that their ideas are just not well-reasoned. Most of their posts tend to be short drive-bys, which are easier to proof than 500 word manifestos (oooh, spelled it "minifestos"... cool neologism).
In short, they're morans.
Edit: spelling.

22. They're uneducated; but DU isn't perfect, either |
|
On an international political board I also post on, the standard of spelling and grammar from the native English-speaking members is definitely better than on DU (when they're being serious, anyway; in the equivalent of the DU Lounge, it can end up looking like a series of text messages - a lot of them are students).
Also, consider that the obvious trolls are the people who think they can start slagging off Democrats, and get away with it on a moderated board: that alone is an indication they're not that sharp. The more intelligent trolls manage to hold a meaningful conversation.

29. It's not the spelling or the grammar, it's |
|
their frame of reference. It's narrow. Freepers, as a group, tend to be less educated, OR less traveled, OR less inquisitive about the world. There are many progressive people without much education. But they're curious about the world. They volunteer. They help people. They read. The freeper types I know are scared. They're scared of "others". Those of different races. Or religions. Or beliefs. Liberals are confident. And happier. We like life. We like people. We like ideas. We don't live in fear they "someone" is going to come and take away our valued stuff. We want to know; ignorance is not a virtue. One of Bush's worst legacies, and he has many, is his elevation of anti-intellectualism. Dumb is good. Dumb is honest. Dumb is real. That's Dubya. No. It isn't. It's just dumb.
