"I glance at the headlines just to kind of get a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who are probably read the news themselves."—Washington, D.C., Sept. 21, 2003
So he doesn't read any news and his advisors "probably" do. Lovely.

2. So, let me see if I understand this... |
|
not only does he not read the news...the people who brief him don't read it themselves either but rather have someone else read it to them too. And he thinks it's perfectly acceptable to find out 3rd hand what's going on in the world.
Eep.

8. maybe she's reading it to him and explaining all of the hard words? |
|
So maybe he was just being honest when he said that he only reads the headlines and then she takes over and does the hard part?

did he mean to say, "people who read the news themselves," that no one who briefs him reads the news, they're read to?

One guy describes AWOL as not "intellectually curious".

17. May not be all that unusual |
|
I seem to remember reading that most presidents get a morning "cheat sheet" of major news stories, collated by White House staff. He's probably talking about that.

18. David Gergen said it was extraordinary |
|
He's worked with past presidents, and he said he found Bush's comments extremely unusual and troubling.
He said that the other presidents he'd observed devoured newspapers, and he said that it's necessary for presidents to get an idea what people are saying, people other than his advisors, no matter how competent they are.
