My friend and I were talking about elections the other day as her 5th grade daughter sat at the table doing homework.. She said "What's so hard about elections.. they are e-a-s-y-".

I asked her just how they did elections 'where she comes from'..

Her answer(paraphrased somewhat):

Okay.. say you have three guys who all want to be elected.. lets call them carlos, steve and jim... You have them close their eyes and after the teacher says each name you just raise your hand until all the hands are counted. Whoever gets the most , wins..

or if more than one class votes, you just make a ballot.

... you write all three names on the paper and you give the kids a magic marker that won't erase, and when everyone turns in their papers, a whole bunch of people count them and write down how many votes everybody gets,. Then we count the papers and the marks on the board. if they match, it's ok. If there are more votes than papers or the other way, we just count them again..only carefully :)

1. There's a report that 5th graders did the best in math this year.
Where did Bush get that dress? Gotta have one for the Stars 'n Bars ball at Fort Sumter, SC.

6. It really IS just that easy..
and when people complain about how they cannot afford to hire and train election workers, That's plain hooey..You cannot tell me that there are not TONS of unemployed people who would LOVE to earn some money every few years..counting ballots, signing people in, checking registries..

It's got to be a lot cheaper than vapor-vote-machines.and a whole lot more reliable..

It's just gotten easier to cheat with machines...
If necessary, just have MORE polling places so that fewer voters are inconvenienced, and MORE helpers hired..

There IS a way to have "good elections", but the people running them have to WANT it that way..

7. I preferred our system to pick the kind of pizza we wanted for the last
day of school in 3rd grade.

What's your first choice of topping?

Second?

Third?

We all ended up having _something_ we liked anyway.
