Rep. Russ Holt can't get any Repugs to sign up for Voter Machine Reform!
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 01:48 PM by KoKo01
NPR's "Talk of Nation - Science Friday" has a show on BBV with: Guy Duncan (VRS)(election systems and software of Raleigh, NC) who's an advocate for BBV and is shilling about how great the machines are; Doug Jones (U. of Iowa) says bad problems and there's a new Stanford study on Diebold machines critical of Maryland Elections using them.

There was a "call in from a Lynn Landis who said she was a Philadelphia Reporter who has been working on this story for awhile and she's very worried about the Touch Screen Voting not having a Paper Trail.

Then they talked with Congressman Russ Holt from NJ who has the bill before congress which would require a paper trail for voting.....When asked where the bill was going and would we get it passed before 2004.....Holt said that he has 40-50 Democrats signed up for it, but he can't get ANY Repugs! He says they seem to think his bill is payback for Selection 2000! I thinks it's terrible there are so few Democrats supporting it, but without any Repugs....the House won't be able to pass it.

Sounds like a massive phone, fax, e-mail Campaign is needed to support Holt........

Here's the link to NPR if anyone wants to get the transcript for the show.

2. Umm...
... that in itself should say something about the party alignment of the machine manufacturers.

I've been telling everyone I know that this is a bipartisan issue, and the Repugs keep proving me wrong....

6. Me too
I knew we would get no traction and no story if we made it partisan. They would just call it sour grapes and slam us and go on with the people happily voting Diebold. Everytime you turn around they look guiltier and guiltier and it is getting hard to remain even handed about this. I have personally always thought they knew, how else could they do the things they have done to our country without even looking like it would ever be a problem? Damn.

9. Not all Republicans like electronic voting, but you can bet they are
pressured.

I think if we could get some "Krugmans" in the media to state the fact the truth and the consequences for Democracy and all Americans if we allow these machines to be utilized without a voter verified paper ballot.

This of course IS a bi-partisan issue, but the Republican Higher end ranks own the machines and are holding everyone else hostage.

Theyve been doing this especially since 2000.

4. I wish someone would write up something and post on Free Repuglic! Freeps
should get really worked up about this.....because it could work against them....If Repugs can rig...so can Dems.....and I would think this would be an issue we could meet minds on. I don't go over there......but I know some here do.

There's enough about this story that I can't imagine they wouldn't start to worry that when Evil Dems get in control they might have access to the "memory" cards and can do lots of funny stuff with the code......

Also Libertarians...should get their knickers in a knot over it.

11. There are threads over there on this
They of course think that Dems are dirty dogs who will use these unsecure machines to steal elections. Which is good of course. But, after maybe five or ten posts, the thread dies until the next article is posted. Again five or ten posts, then nothing.

14. The 7 highest ranking Repubilcan Senators in the Senate
Bill Frist
Mitch McConnell
Rick Santorum
Bob Bennett
Kay Bailey Hutchington
John Kyle
George Allen
Every one of them recieved a scorecard of 100% from Christian Coalition. That means they voted with Christian Coalition 100% of the time.
How were people representing such an extreme ideological point of view elected to the top positions in the Repubilican Party?

www.theocracywatch.org

This coupled with the fact that touchscreen voting machines got their start with money from billionaire Howard Ahmanson, the poster boy for Theonomic Reconstructionism makes me think we've got a big problem on our hands.

16. Thanks for letting me know. Time to go back to my GOP Rep.
since he was interested in the situation, said he thought he could support Holt's bill, and wasn't comfortable with electronic voting machines without a paper ballot that could be verified by the voter and recounted if needed.

17. If we can just turn some of the Repugs to vote with the Dems..In NC......
I've got Liddy Dole and John Edwards........not much luck there. Edwards is campaigning so much that my paper says he's missed 90% of his votes in the Senate (paper said....he wasn't the worst, out of the candidates, though) and Liddy Dole is a waste of time. I've got both our House Reps.....saying they will support it.....so that's the best I can do here.......but some of you live in states where you can presure your House members....especially if they are moderate Repugs and not the hard core DeLay types.

It's worth sending them a fax......or calling their home office. But a fax seems to work really well....especially if you can send a clip of infomation in it to them, as to why paperless voting machines are not good. Make it personal and they might listen.....if you tell them it's your vote you want counted.

18. Rush Holt is the most decent, honest, and honorable man I ever met.
And he is a 5 time jeopardy champion (no kidding) and a nuclear physicist. His campaign slogan is "My Congressman is a rocket scientist" (he holds a patent for a space propulsion technological innovation). He was involved with the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab before going into politics. Support him, he deserves it.

he had never heard of the Holt Bill, so he said he would get back to me. He did. I rec'd a very nice letter discussing his position on "internet voting". He thought it needed more investigation, but did believe that a paper receipt would be nice for our "internet" vote.

Would you believe he is a Repig....of course you would. Name is Patrick Tiberi of Ohio.

:wtf:

22. HIGH TREASON
Edited on Sat Sep-27-03 10:11 AM by ldf
i think we should seriously start equating subverting our democratic elections, in any way, shape or form, with High Treason.

the punishment for High Treason would be up to, and including, capital punishment.

every person who has gone along with, or helped in any way to make the electronic voting systems susceptable to this outrageous fraud, must be made to tremble from the fear that they may get caught.

and we need to make sure that we are not going to let up until the people responsible for the original idea, the hardware/software, and those who are part of the disinformation campaign, are held accountable.

we need someone in congress, preferably a senator, to introduce a bill stating specifically that any collusion with those who are involved with this effort to turn the voting process into a sham, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

and then, offer an amnesty period, for those who were involved but would like to reverse their role in this abortion of democracy.

i hate a snitch, but i think the survival of this country is more important than my discomfort with someone naming names.

if we took this approach, some of those involved my get cold feet, and all we need is one or two to make it all fall down.

edit for spelling

24. It still is nonpartisan, the moderate republicans just don't realize it
If bbv is used to rig elections, eventually the whole country will be "electing" republicans. But then what? The extremists republicans, who are the only ones immoral enough to pull this off, will make sure even moderate republicans don't make it past the primaries.
